"This can't all be mine when you're not mine," Amaira blurted out without thinking.
"I... uh..." Kabir was in distress. He couldn't figure out how to react to her truth.
"Look, Mr. Mehra, I'm not complaining to you or trying to make you feel guilty. I know you want to see me happy. And for that, you're doing everything you can. And for that, I am grateful to you. But when I said yes to marriage, I knew very well that I would never impose myself on you. For the family, we are together, but there shouldn't be any burden on either of us. Whatever is between us, it's like an agreement, so that both of our families remain happy. Nothing more. I don't want to bring expensive gifts or money between us because I don't want to adopt any habit that is not mine and never will be, which I have no right to."
"It's no burden on me," Kabir said lovingly.
"Yes, spending money might not be a big deal for you. But for me, it's a huge burden. Please understand. If I ever need something, I'll ask you for it, but I can't accept this expensive jewelry, not now and not ever. I won't be able to handle it," Amaira said in one breath.
"Okay, okay. If you don't want it for yourself, at least keep it for the family. If someone asks you what I gave you for our wedding anniversary, at least you'll have an answer," Kabir insisted.
"Fine," Amaira said.
"So, if this isn't right, I hope you'll accept my other gift. It's not as expensive and it's also useful for you," Kabir said politely, smiling at her, and seeing him, Amaira smiled too. "Please accept it, otherwise my heart will break."
"Don't ever do this again, or else I'll misunderstand that you're joking too," Amaira said teasingly.
"Then you don't know me at all," Kabir said, smiling.
"Did you buy this yourself?"
"No. I never go to any ladies' department and ask them to give me a night suit for my wife. So, I ordered it online last night. Try it on and check the size, if there's any problem, we can exchange it online. Then you can buy for it according to your liking because I ordered what I thought was right."
"Can I change its color?" Amaira asked in a secretive manner.
"No. You can't change its color at all. If you want, consider it my punishment for not accepting my other gift."
"Okay. Then I'll try it on right now," Amaira said and went to the bathroom. When she came back, she had one on, which made Kabir smile when he saw it.
*"At least my eyes will get some rest, better than that pink color,"* Kabir thought to himself.
"This is nice. I liked it. Thank you."
"Thank you won't cut it. Where's my gift? You might be forgetting that it was also my wedding day with you."
"Uh... I actually forgot. I'll definitely get it for you later."
"Yes, please. I'm very particular about such transactions. I never forget anything," Kabir joked and went back to working on his laptop.
"Okay." Amaira now sat in front of the mirror and began applying night cream like she does every night before sleeping. While doing so, she kept glancing at Kabir through the mirror.
"What?" Kabir asked. He felt like Amaira's gaze was fixed on him.
"What?" Amaira replied.
"Why were you staring at me?" Kabir asked with questioning eyes.
"I wasn't staring," Amaira lied.
"You were. Tell me what's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Amaira, come on. What's wrong?"
"You'll get angry. I won't tell you."
"Okay. I won't get angry. Now tell me."
"I'm telling you beforehand, either you'll get angry or upset. And I don't want you to be either."
"Nothing can make me upset. Now tell me."
"Please, Mr. Mehra."
"Please, Amaira."
"Mahima was very lucky," Amaira said, lowering her gaze, and Kabir's eyes closed upon hearing Mahima's name.
"Why did you say that?" Kabir asked, sounding a bit hurt.
"You chose such a thoughtful gift for me, even though you don't know me well. Then you must care a lot for Mahima," Amaira said, looking lovingly at Kabir.
"I was lucky because she was in my life," Kabir was lost in fond memories of the past.
"I feel the same way," Amaira said.
"You? When?" Kabir looked eagerly at Amaira.
"I was in college at that time. In the first year. I was a big fan of hers. When the news of your marriage with her came out, I also felt that you were very lucky to have found her. But it seemed the opposite to my other classmates."
"Really? Why?"
"They felt that she was lucky to have found you. In every news, it was reflected how much you love her. How you take care of her, how you always make her feel special. How both of you convinced your families even though you belong to different religions. That was the highlight of all the news at that time. I felt like any man would fall in love with her like a big movie star. So, I thought you were lucky to be chosen by her."
"You're right. She had many options, but she chose me. She had a lot of trust in me," Kabir smiled, lost in his sweet memories.
"You love her a lot," as Amaira said this, Kabir began to look at her with moist eyes. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have talked about her. Look, you're getting upset again."
"No, it's okay. It's the first time I'm smiling while remembering those good days. It feels good today, remembering those lovely memories. I always avoided talking about her because whenever I did, I only remembered her death, which saddened me a lot. But today feels very good. Thank you," Kabir spoke from his heart.
"If that's the case, then you'll have to tell me about those good days. You should remember them only for those good moments, not for the bad ones," Amaira said lovingly, and Kabir lowered his head to hide his tears.
"I first met her when my company tied up with her for a promotion, and she visited my office. After seeing her for the first time, I decided that I wouldn't let her go without getting her number. I fell in love with her at first sight," Kabir smiled, recalling those sweet memories. "So, tell me, what was published in all those newspapers at that time? I didn't know I was so popular." Kabir tried to return to normalcy.
"No, you weren't as popular back then as you are today. You were just a guy working in finance at that time, but she was a big star. And when she announced her marriage with you, there was a lot of gossip surrounding both of you. I always used to tell my friends that my mom is friends with your mom and I've known you since childhood. So, they always kept asking me to know the inside scoop because I used to visit here mostly with mom and Di, so I easily got to know the news," she revealed while speaking, also disclosing this secret.
"Really?"
