"Please say that you're joking," Amayra whispered after a while. She was in shock from Kabir's confession.
"No, Amayra. I'm telling the absolute truth. This is no joke. I know you're shocked, but what can I do? I couldn't keep this from you any longer. The truth is that I love you. I love you very much."
"No, you don't. You don't love me. You can't love me. You love Mahima. Only her," Amayra shouted.
"Yes, I do. But that doesn't mean I can't have feelings for you. I was so deeply in love with Mahima that I couldn't move forward in my life. My life had come to a standstill. But you, with your lively spirit, made me realize that I can still smile, that I can live with the good memories of Mahima, instead of being sad remembering her."
"You can't say that. You can't do this. I will never take her place. Never."
"You're not taking anyone's place. You've created your own place. In this house, in my life, in my heart. Earlier, when Mom used to ask me about getting married, I would refuse because I thought that whoever my wife would be, she'd try to make me forget Mahima. But you've made her memories even more beautiful for me. You taught me how to laugh again, and never once expected me to forget her. You're not taking her place, not at all."
"No... no... no... this is all a lie. A big lie."
"Why would I lie, Amayra?"
"Because you're feeling guilty, and now you're saying all this out of a sense of responsibility," Amayra said, her eyes filled with tears.
"What? What are you saying?"
"Yes. You're doing all this because I refused to give you a divorce."
"So?" Kabir was confused.
"What do you mean 'so'? You thought that now I’ll stay here forever, and you know I want a complete family and children, so you feel it's your responsibility to give me that. You feel bad for me, thinking I'm stuck here without the things I wanted, and that's why you're offering me this now. But you know what? I don’t want your charity. You're just insulting me by saying all this."
"Please, Amayra, you're misunderstanding me. I really love you. Why would I pretend to do all this?"
"Because you're a good person. And you want to see me happy, even if it means lying to me about suddenly falling in love with me."
"I do love you, Amayra. And it's not something that happened suddenly. It's been happening for a long time; I just didn’t realize it before, but now I do. And I’m completely sure about it."
"Oh, please stop repeating the same thing over and over. I don't want to hear it." Amayra covered both her ears with her hands.
"Maybe you're scared because I confessed so suddenly, but know this—it didn’t happen all of a sudden. I wanted to tell you before, but I didn’t have the courage. And now that I’ve told you, I don’t expect you to accept my feelings right away. Take your time, think about it. Maybe you'll realize that I’m telling the truth."
"What about your feelings for Mahima? Has your love for her ended now that you've fallen in love with me?" Amayra asked in a stern tone.
"No, Amayra. I can never stop loving her. She will always be a part of my life, even though she’s no longer here. But loving her doesn’t mean I love you any less. I just want to move forward in life, be happy with you. I want to live a life full of love, laughter, and happiness with you."
"I can't believe this is happening to me. Why did you do all this? Why didn't you just let me be the way I was? Oh God, why me?" Amayra said regretfully.
"Am I so horrible that you're this upset?" Kabir joked.
"Oh, stop it. Don’t even try to play your dirty games with me. I thought you were my friend, but you've ruined everything. Why?" Amayra broke into tears.
"There's no harm in loving someone, especially when she’s your own wife."
"Oh, so now all of a sudden you remember I’m your wife, huh? Why now?"
"Are you mad at me because I didn’t see you as my wife before? And now that I do, you're getting back at me by rejecting me?"
"Are you really this vile? Are you making up these twisted stories to justify yourself and your actions?" Amayra yelled.
"What actions are you talking about?"
"The ones you did out there, in the hall, in front of everyone." Amayra glared at Kabir.
"Oh, so you're mad because I kissed you in the hall, in front of everyone. I could do it right here, alone in my room. What should I do?" Kabir intentionally took a step toward Amayra, and she, sensing the danger, took a step back.
"Don’t even think about it. You can't kiss me," Amayra warned.
"Are you telling me, or challenging me?" Kabir asked mischievously. "Because if you’re telling me, I can prove you wrong right now, and I promise you won't complain. And if it’s a challenge, I wholeheartedly accept it. And I'll be thrilled to win that challenge," Kabir whispered as he leaned closer to her, and Amayra began to blush.
"How can you say such things so easily?" Amayra was deeply flustered.
"I can say much more. I love being with you, I love looking at you, and I love talking to you. And I’d love to hold you, kiss you, and..."
"Okay, stop it. Look, Mr. Mehra, I don’t know what’s gotten into you, but don’t think I’ll let you do whatever you want," Amayra said, glaring at him.
"Tell her you love her. If she says no, try to win her over. Convince her of your love, just like you convinced me," Kabir recalled what Mahima had told him when he had imagined her during their conversation.
How did you know she’d say no? Oh, how could I forget, she’s just like you.
"What? Why are you laughing? Am I telling jokes here?" Amayra asked, irritated.
"What you said just seemed funny to me, that’s why I laughed. You don't need to try so hard," Kabir replied with a smile, and Amayra stomped her foot in frustration.
"Whatever. Just remember, I don’t care about any of this drama. So, stop repeating it in front of me, because I'm not interested. At all," Amayra said and headed toward the door.
Kabir watched her leave, quickly grabbed her hand, and pulled her into his arms.
"What? What are you doing?" Amayra was startled.
"This isn't any kind of drama, Amayra. I love you. I truly want you with all my heart. You can choose to love me or not, but you can't say that I’m acting. If you don’t believe it now, that’s okay."
