y/n can't believe she has agreed to do this, play hide & seek in the rain. she hadn't even played this game ever since she was in elementary school. she got up from her seat and made a beeline toward the front door before stopping—it sure was pouring outside. realistically, they can only play for a few minutes before they become cold and will have to scurry back inside to warm up.
just as y/n outstretched a hand to turn the doorknob, the other mother's voice made her halt her actions, "darling, you know you can't go outside looking like that..." she trails off.
"oh," y/n looked down at her clothes, reminding herself that she was in her pajamas. one step outside and they'll be ruined. "yeah, i guess you're right."
"here, follow me." the other mother led y/n down the hall before stopping abruptly in front of a seemingly ordinary closet, the woman's eerie smile widened. she opened the door with a smooth creak, revealing a cascade of coats and jackets that hung in perfect alignment, creating a surreal symphony of colors. "here, wear these," she declared, her voice a melodic yet unsettling harmony. she extracted a brightly yellow raincoat and a pair of matching rain boots, the hues so bright that y/n felt like she had to squint to make it easier on the eyes.
"oh..." y/n hesitated, eyeing the conspicuously cheerful ensemble with a hint of skepticism. playing hide & seek in the rain was an exciting prospect, but the garish colors seemed counterintuitive to the art of concealment. wouldn't it be fair if she was given more dull colors, something that would help her blend in? "thank you..." nevertheless, y/n accepted the offered garments.
the other mother observed with an intensity that sent shivers down y/n's spine as she draped the sunshine-colored raincoat over her pajamas. the material was silky yet durable, emanating an otherworldly charm.
the rain boots, a perfect match to the coat, slid on effortlessly, encasing y/n's feet in a snug embrace. the other mother's button eyes gleamed with an under-the-light mysterious satisfaction as if foreseeing the unfolding events. when the h/c-haired girl was finished putting everything on, y/n stood before the other mother, who then exclaimed: "oh, you look marvelous!"
"really?" y/n asked sheepishly, thinking she looked like a complete idiot.
"of course. why," the older woman clasped her hands together. "you've never looked better." she further drove the compliment into y/n's heart, wanting her to believe her. "don't you agree, my sweet?" she looked past her and knowing that she was now addressing the other father, y/n turned around to hear his input on her outfit.
the other father poked his head out of the dining room, "hey, i was going to wear that!" he said, jokingly. even if his response was a bit different than what y/n was wanting, she still appreciated him trying to make her feel better about wearing the bright clothes. "i'm just kidding with you," he then added. "are you ready?"
"yes." y/n answered.
the rain poured down in a relentless cascade, transforming the garden into a glistening labyrinth of shadows and reflections. y/n, the other father, and the other mother stood at the edge of the garden, ready to embark on a game of hide & seek.
