that night, y/n made a vow to herself when she was brushing her teeth. she swore that from here on out, she would not return to the other world until she figured out for certain that it was beyond a shadow of a doubt safe to go to this other, parallel domination. it may hurt the other mother and father in the long run, but considering that miss spink said that she was 'in danger', y/n couldn't afford to be careless.
so, when walking into her room, the h/c-haired girl suspiciously eyed her bedroom door— which she moved to be slightly ajar— and the doll, who sat on the chair beside her bed before settling under the covers. the other mother will live one night without seeing her, right? it won't be the end of the world. given her character, she above anyone else should understand why y/n is doing this, assuming they're both on the same page.
she upheld her promise for a while, trying to push thoughts of the other world to the back of her mind. eventually, exhaustion overcame her, and she drifted into a restless sleep.
in the middle of the night, a strange noise jolted her awake. she strained her ears, listening intently. it sounded like something squeaking, followed by the patter of tiny feet scurrying across the floor. heart pounding, she slowly pulled the blankets off and peered over the edge of her bed. her eyes widened in disbelief as she saw a pair of mice tugging at the doll wybie had given her. her eyebrows furrowed at the sight of the mice, who had the doll clutched between them, dragging it toward the crack in her bedroom door.
y/n gasped, the sound escaping her before she could stop it. "hey!" she yelled, springing out of bed.
the mice froze for a split second, their tiny eyes wide with alarm, before darting through the crack in the door, the doll still in their grasp. y/n groaned, frustrated and more than a little curious. she couldn't let them disappear with the doll. it was the one piece of evidence of the other world existing, well, all aside from her scrape on her hand but that was beside the point. throwing on her slippers, she quickly followed them out of her room and into the hallway.
once outside of her room and in the hallway, y/n moved cautiously, her ears attuned to the faint scurrying ahead of her. the mice led her down the hallway, downstairs, and into the living room. it was there that she spotted the rodents, who had now abandoned the doll in the distant corner of the room, forgotten, heading towards the little door. they were just about to slip through when she flicked on the light, illuminating the room in a harsh glow. the mice stopped, hesitating at the sudden brightness.
"gotcha!" y/n said, stepping forward. but before she could grab them, the mice made a desperate dash, slipping through the little door and disappearing. groaning in frustration, the h/c-haired girl pulls the little door open. the bricks are gone! the tunnel is here...seeing that it had returned, y/n sat on her knees, looking down the colorful tunnel, frowning. letting out a small sigh, she gets down on all fours and crawls through, albeit hesitantly.
as she came out on the other side, y/n made a beeline toward the other kitchen where she— as expected— found the other mother preparing a delicious breakfast, despite it being dark out. not that y/n minded. though, the older woman looked prettier tonight for some reason; her hair shining, and her lips were plastered red. She stopped humming a lullaby when she turned to greet the teenager, "welcome back, darling," she said. "you had me worried sick. i was starting to think you wouldn't come back tonight..." she admitted.
