J O S H
"Josh, speak to me!" I can't I'm an idiot. I ran out of there thinking the worst, yet again! "Ryder has been a mess." Don't you think I don't know that! But that image of him smiling while I have been at war with my heart for the past three months. It's doing things to me. "I thought therapy was helping."
"It is!"
"Then what is going on Joshy Pooh?"
"I don't deserve him." I've been here for two weeks and am deathly afraid of seeing him, even though I am dying to. "I thought..."
"He moved on." She knows me too well. Bowing my head in shame because I cannot look her in the eyes. Pity. It is the one thing I still cannot face; it drives me mad. Her delicate hand lands on my shoulder. When I don't flinch, a breath escapes me in relief. "You need to talk to him, before he drinks himself stupid."
"What?!" Snapping my head up to look at my best friend. What the hell is she talking about?
"He doesn't leave the house Josh. The only time he does is when one of us drag him away. Which reminds me we are going to a benefit tonight. It's costume themed." The old me would have jumped for joy at this but I'm not the same anymore. I've changed. "Come on, I don't get out often. My parents have JT and it's for a good cause."
She knows I am a sucker for a good cause.
"What's it called."
"Our Future Hope." Shit! I know what this is for. The guilty look on her face tells me she knew I would have a hard time with this. "It will be good. No one will know what happened." You don't know that! One look at me and I scream tragedy. "Please!"
If I want to get past this, I know what I need to do.
"Fine! But if it gets overwhelming..."
"We will leave in a heartbeat." That's why I love this woman. She knows what my limits are before anyone else will, besides him. "Great! I got just the costume for you." Of course you do.
"What is this?"
"You're costume. Just put it on so we can leave. We are already behind schedule."
She had this damn thing planned! Sneaky little... Not going to say it she will kick my ass. I Love her to death, but she's scary at times. I think she has been hanging around Stacy way too much.
"How do I put this damn thing on?"
"I'll help, if you want that is."
I hate that everyone is still cautious around me. I need to move past this and maybe everyone around me will too.
"That would be great. Wouldn't want to get this thing on wrong."
********
"I feel silly Kat."
"You look great! I promise, people are going to be in awe." I was afraid of the attention it might draw. I mean come on a freaking angel. The outfit itself is pretty great, I even let her talk me into putting some light glitter on my face. "Are you ready?" No, I want to turn around and run.
No more running. I need to move forward, not backwards.
Stepping into the venue is just breathtaking. They made it look so beautiful but most of all a comfortable and soothing atmosphere. People in all different costumes with smiling faces, having a good time. I wonder how many people here have dealt with some type of trauma.
