The next morning I wake up quite a while before my weather and am so upset inside that I can't go back to sleep. So I decide to boot up my laptop and surf the internet for a bit.
Maybe I can find some more information about my new boss or I'll do a little online shopping again. The cold season is slowly approaching and I'm just not ready for the wet, windy days in London yet.
However, when I type Zac's name into the search bar, I get a strange feeling and I'm no longer sure if I even want to know what's being written about him. Most of the stories you read about him are only half-truths or completely made up.
So I'll probably stick to shopping. After putting together a few new fall and winter outfits and getting ready for the day at the office, I shut down the laptop and make my way to the small café just around the corner from the office complex where I work and sit down I sit at a quiet table in the back of the room with a few files.
I slowly sip my tea and enjoy the peace and quiet that still reigns here at this time. I keep watching the people slowly streaming past the windows in ever larger numbers. The tube station opposite now looks like the exit from an ant hole and I have to giggle quietly at the thought of it.
"What's so funny?" an unknown voice at the table next to me asks me. I turn to the good-looking young man, who looks at me with a curious look and I have the slight suspicion that I have seen him somewhere before.
"Do you see the people out there? This city is like a huge ant hole at this time of day and it's fascinating how anonymous everything is." I answer his question with a smile. He also turns his gaze outside and a plausible impression appears on his face. "You're right. It "It's scurrying around like crazy and everyone is just engrossed in their smartphones or with their eyes on the ground. Hardly anyone pays attention to the other people around them. It's actually almost frightening how indifferent we wander through the world."
I just nod thoughtfully at him and as I think about it I realize that I'm actually no different in this respect. "I can only agree with you, but can you take exception to that? I mean, if you're honest, I usually rush through the streets in the morning just like the other "ants". You should walk through the world much more often with your eyes and, above all, your mind open and take the time to simply take in your surroundings!"
"Those are very wise words, Miss...?" he raises his eyebrows questioningly. "My name is Charlotte Love and who do I have the pleasure of seeing?" "I'm Lucas. Nice to meet you!" At the moment I'm far too fascinated by his incredible amber eyes that I don't even notice that he doesn't mention his last name.
"You excuse me, Lucas? Unfortunately, I now have to immerse myself in the flow of people out there and slowly make my way to my office... It was really refreshing to talk to them! You take care."
Without waiting for another word, I stand and wave to him again as I step out the door into the cold morning air and join the ongoing stream of London's working population to make my way to my job.
I step through the warm airflow above the door and immediately feel like I've been transported back to another day... I reluctantly get into the elevator that's supposed to take me to my floor and sincerely hope that Zac is in a better mood today than he was yesterday, or at least a little bit is less harsh with me or at least the others in the department.
But I don't have to worry about it because he's not even in the house. The first thing I find in my office is an email in my inbox telling me that he won't be back in the house until next week and that until then I should only forward the most important emails to him. A representative will probably come in by then and give me a hand from time to time.
I breathe out in relief, but still a little sadness spreads through me. Can it really be that I miss him after such a short time? Confused, I shake my head to clear the thought and close my eyes briefly.
"Oh, we'll see each other again so soon! I assume that you are my brother's assistant then, Miss Charlotte Love?" Startled, I open my eyes again and in front of me stands the man with whom I spoke to in the café 15 minutes ago about the temporary blindness of us humans. "Then you are the representative from whom Zachery wrote to me?!" I reply after my heartbeat calms down a bit.
They couldn't be more different. One has blue eyes and light brown hair and then Lucas with his amber eyes and almost black curls and three-day beard. He seems far more wicked than Zac... Almost dangerous and he knows exactly how he affects the women of this world, that much is clear!
"So did he mention me? That's something new... How come they can use him on a first-name basis? My brother usually has strict rules." He looks at me curiously so intensely that I almost feel dizzy. At least that's what he has in common with his brother.
"Uh-um... He just mentioned that someone would stop by to replace him, nothing more..." I just don't answer his question about first name because I don't feel like explaining it to him... What can I say? -I slept with her brother a few times and he offered me the duo - that wouldn't work out so well after all!
He doesn't seem to notice or is simply not interested, so I quickly change the subject. "Can I do something for you, Mr. Hyde?" "Why so formal? I'm Lucas... but you already know that!"
His winning smile reveals two incredibly pretty dimples and makes him look even more attractive. "Of course, Lucas, can I help you?" I ask him with a small sigh. I know exactly what he wants to achieve, but I won't get involved.
"Yes, you can actually... I need a few files that you should have been working on. Can you find out about the Bitonect case? And then I would like to have lunch with you in the café this morning... We have a lot of catching up to do. The people from Bitonect will be here tomorrow morning and if we don't want to work overtime, we'll have to use the break to get trained in time!"
With that he leaves my office and disappears into his brother's. I let my head fall back in frustration and really ask myself where this is going to get me? It's milking mice... How am I supposed to work with him if I already find him so attractive!
This can only end in chaos.
