TODAY MARKED THREE DAYS AFTER the farm, still, there was the gripping tension in the air after Rick's democracy speech. And slowly, but surely, Freya had been trying everyday for that tension to fade away, pulling (awful) jokes and trying to get people to enjoy each others company.
But no, everyone has to bitch around the whole of the apocalypse. But today, everyone was more civil, as a very small town showed up. Well, it wasn't a town, it was more like a corner stop on a road that diverged off a highway. It had the main center, which looked like it used to be a café of some kind, and then on the opposite side of the road, there was a newspaper shop, a drugstore and a tourist shop.
The café was the first of everything to be cleared out. There was an elderly walker hanging out in the back with a dead bird on it's head -so not a gagging sight at all. Other than bird walker, the actual part of the café had pretty solid walls and only one entrance. Clearly fire safety was not in the minds of the construction workers, and Freya would thank them for it.
Pushing all the tables and chairs back, then ripping the cushions off the chairs, a makeshift slumber party set was created."Alright." Rick started, helping his wife to sit down then completely leaving her alone. He turned to the rest of the group while Lori, Carl, Beth, Hershel, Carol and Sophia got some rest. "Glenn, Maggie, I want you guys to look through the newspaper store. Daryl and Freya, you guys take the drugstore and take whatever you can get -doesn't matter what, we may need it. T-dog and I will look through the last one, see if there was anything to round up."
"Uh," Glenn glanced at Maggie before turning to Rick. It wasn't very common that someone would challenge Rick in anyway shape or form now due to his recent outburst the other night, but Glenn was strong enough to know what was right. "I barely have any ammo left, and Maggie doesn't have any at all."
Freya easily stepped forward, passing over her gun without a second thought. "Here, I got Sophia's knife with me."
In truth, it was a big ass knife and Sophia wasn't really using it right now, so Freya called dibs. Besides, if Glenn refused to let Maggie come, then both Maggie and Rick will argue with him, and every effort from Freya to make the long days become a little better will become ruined.Maggie took the knife, but looked to Freya with uncertainty. "Are you sure?"
"As long as we don't shoot either, I'm sure." Freya gently slapped her arm before making her way to the door where Daryl was waiting. Maggie said her thanks and then the 3 groups of two made their way to each separate store.
Freya reached for the door handle, but Daryl's hand flew out, grabbing her wrist and stopping her from opening the foggy glassed doors. "Hol' up...knock on 'em windows, see if a walkers in there first."
Instead of making Freya do it, Daryl had brought his hand up to the door, subsequentially letting go of Freya's arm and banging on the door four times in no certain pattern.Maybe 30 seconds went by and Freya glanced back to Daryl, raising her eyebrow at him. She had gotten better at it now, raising one eyebrow. Crazy what practice does now, isn't it?
And possibly without waiting for Daryl's approval, Freya went right on in, ready to face and fight off anything with her bare hands...maybe sleep was a necessity. The drugstore was already pretty dimly lit, and without any torches, so Freya and Daryl would just have to make do with the natural light. There was three tall shelves that connected to the ceiling, that were nearly completely stacked the the brim with your everyday apocalypse needs.
"Come to mama." Freya muttered, reaching for her backpack that -surprise- lain on her back, and she opened it, moving to one of the shelves and just dumping everything inside. Tampons, pads, pads with wings, a lone can of dry shampoo. Beth and Freya herself had recently started their periods, and constantly either wrapping it up with toilet paper or the cleanest rag they could find would not do.
For a moment, Freya considered getting pregnant just to avoid her period, but she rethought her thinking very quickly afterwards.
