RECAP

My phone vibrated letting me know I had gotten a text.  I flipped open my phone and turned on the screen.

*If you want to see her alive come to 212 Maple St. London by 2 pm. tomorrow with 2 million dollars or she dies* I gasped and ran to find the others.

“I got a text.” I said.

Emily and Max looked at me.  I showed them the text and as Emily cried into Max’s shoulder I went to figure out how I was going to get 2 million dollars together by tomorrow.

Don’t worry Anna.  I’m coming.  One way or another...

Anna’s POV

I blinked rapidly as my eyes adjusted to the darkness.  I must have only been asleep for a few hours at most if it was still dark out.  I looked around to see if I could find a way out.  I had worked on the knot that my mother had foolishly tied right next to my hands.  It was loose but not loose enough for me to slip my hands though.  Yet.

A door opened and slammed shut somewhere to my right,  I heard heels clomping down the wooden stairs into my ‘holding cell’ of a basement.  My mother walked into the light with a mad grin on her face.

“Good morning sweetheart!  How are you feeling?”

I could make out the time, 11:00, on her watch.  She was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.  To anyone on the outside she would have looked like she was headed out into the year for spring cleaning but I knew better.

“I have a surprise for you darling.”

She walked over to the bottom of the stairs and stopped.

“JOHN! Bring him in!”

She looked at me and laughed.  I heard the door open again and this time two sets of feet descended the stairs.  Mu stomach dropped and my heart started to pound furiously in my chest when I saw the bruised and beaten face of the boy that I loved.  Jack,  They had Jack,

“NO!  Mom no!  Please!  Let him go and I’ll stay.  Please!”

Tears were streaming out of my eyes furiously and running down my face to drip off my chin.  Jack looked up at me. His eyes were full of pain and fear but he still managed a smile.  Like somehow he had a plan.
