I stood there for a while deliberating how some people can be so selfish and arrogant that they don't even realise that their foolish deeds can cost someone's life.
After cognizing that these people can never change for good, I turned towards the little girl who stood beside me crying.
"Please don't cry, nothing has happened. Now behave like a good girl and never try to cross a road on your own.", I said as I placed my hands on her shoulder trying to calm her.
She nodded giving me an innocent smile. Seeing her, I realized that even if I am going through a rough start but then an innocent smile from a kid has made my day cheerful as ever.
Just as this thought arrived in my mind, I saw a taxi approaching.
Luckily, the taxi was vacant and finally I could now reach the hospital on time. The drive to the hospital would take some time depending on the traffic on the road. So I called on the reception area to inform about how much time I would take to reach the hospital.
The receptionist told me how impatient the patient's family had become inspite of the prediagnostic treatment given to the patient by medical interns. I asked her to somehow manage the situation till I arrive.
Now the only way left was to hope that the patient's health doesn't deteriorate till I reach.
When I reached the hospital, I rushed towards the resuscitation area where the patient was being given a temporary treatment.
When I reached there, I went to the reception area to ask about the room where the patient was admitted.
"Thank God Dr. Nambiar, you have arrived just on time. The patient is being treated in Room No. 3 and I have been informed that the patient is not responding to the prediagnostic treatment given. Now it is completely in your hands and I would like you to be extra careful about this particular case as the patient you would be treating is the mother of Mr. Rajveer Agnihotri."
I stood there in bewilderment, completely taken aback by the last name uttered.
"Why hasn't the attending surgeon arrived yet, if anything happens to my mother because of your sheer negligence, you very well know what would be the fate of this hospital after that.", a familiar voice yelled at the receptionist, making me flinch from my state of shock.
I finally came into my senses and turned towards the source of the sound to see him standing beside the reception eyeing the receptionist with rage-filled eyes.
"Mr. Agnihotri, can you please calm down and stop terrorising our staff. I am Dr. Avni Nambiar, the cardiovascular surgeon who would be attending your mother, so if you have any questions you can ask me.", I stated sternly.
I could see how the expression on Rajveer Agnihotri's face turned from rage to shock while I continued to stare him down.
He recovered from shock in just a fraction of second and replied in an annoyed tone,
"If you have finished protecting your staff, you can now check on my mother. You have already arrived late and now you are wasting your time teaching me how I should behave with your staff."Now this person was really getting on my nerves but I tried to hide my anger and replied him in a monotonous tone,
"It is my duty to see that no one terrorises my staff and I would like to add that I am not late but I would have reached earlier if I wouldn't have been stuck dealing with some ignorant fools on my way here to the hospital."He was completely shocked with my reply but before his expression would change and he would come back with a reply, I headed towards the room without glancing back while he stood there dead in his tracks.
