Jimin has always (not really) been known for her cold and arrogant front. It began when she was fourteen. Kind, naive and a little strange. Moving to another school far away from her old one because her father had gotten a job in a different state. The new school wasn't the same as her old school. So she made one friend and kept it as only one till the end of her life (probably).
But this isn't about her best friend Aeri, or even about her other somewhat friend who is her neighbor Ningning. It's about Kim Minjeong who is a junior of hers that has managed to worm her way into Jimin's still big heart, past the wall of icy cool demeanor.
Now a senior in high school, Jimin is a popular jock known for being the girls' basketball team's lucky charm and having a soft spot for the high school sweetheart, junior student Kim Minjeong.
Now, Minjeong... She's a bit odd. But that's what makes her so loved among their peers. And really, Jimin shouldn't have been all that surprised when Minjeong runs up to her at the end of the day with a new idea in her pretty little head.
“Unnie!”
Smiling, Jimin takes out one of her ear buds. “Hey, Minjeong. What's up?”
The junior stuffs her hand inside her blazer pocket and fishes out a packet of gum. The grin on her face clearly tells Jimin that she's in for a wild ride. “Okay, so I saw this theory online,” She pauses and shakes her head, laughing. “It's not an actual theory. It's just a trivial thing that has been circulating. But!”
Jimin watches with an anticipating smile, leans back on one leg and crosses her arms over her chest. Minjeong's wearing a black and blue zigzagged scarf around her neck and she looks so tiny with it. Jimin can't help but be in awe.
“Apparently if you can roll a piece of gum perfectly neat, you're deemed a good kisser.”
Hold on.
“I'm sorry, what?”
Minjeong chuckles nervously. “At first I thought it was just for views, you know. But I tried it and.. it's actually pretty difficult. Here, look,” The junior doesn't hesitate to pluck out a piece of gum from the packet and tears it open before popping it into her mouth.
And when she begins ‘rolling’, Jimin can't take her eyes off of Minjeong's mouth. Something about watching her work her jaw around like that is triggering fireworks in Jimin's gut, making her stomach churn in a way that isn't too good but not unwelcome. It's fascinating and very intriguing — Minjeong has thin pretty lips, Jimin mentally notes.
And gosh, she really needs to stop thinking about Minjeong like this.
“Look!” The rolled piece of gum is now snug between Minjeong top and bottom rows of teeth. It's amusing despite its messiness. “Mine is all wonky! I just can't get it perfectly aligned together.”
Not a good kisser. Apparently. Jimin presses her lips together. That's fine. She can learn, still.
Oh my fuck. Please just stop thinking.
Maybe I can teach her? Jimin very nearly sends her fist in her own face. “Haven't our teachers been teaching us to not trust things on the internet?” That may be the cleanest escape she's made in the whole year. Minus the times she'd skipped practice by climbing over the gate out back.
Minjeong snorts. “Yeah, well, this one is harmless.”
Jimin shrugs. “That's true, I guess. But why are you telling me this?”
Without warning, a piece of gum is shoved into her face. The shiny wrapper viciously attacks her retinas when it reflects the light above their heads. She takes it from Minjeong's fingers, pointedly glaring down at the junior.
“Try it. I want to see if you can get it right.”
Blinking, Jimin inwardly groans, Oh, I am so sick. Maybe it's time she shuts off her organs because it's not even two seconds after Minjeong says that does she interpret her words as: She wants to see if I'm a good kisser.
It's harmless, yes. But it's also useless. Jimin wants to put the gum inside her mouth and run away, doesn't want to feed her own fantasies. But of course, she is Yu Jimin for a reason and that reason is to be at Kim Minjeong's every beck and call.
She does it. Bites down on the gum, rolls it up, displays it between her teeth with an underlying confidence that she doesn't know it came from where. This is ridiculous, she thinks a second later when Minjeong's jaw drops.
“Is that perfectly neat for you?” Jimin slurs due to the rolled up gum and decides that mint with hints of cafeteria food don't go well together. It tastes like drinking orange juice right after brushing your teeth. Oh God.
“Yeah, I— I guess so, yep..”
Oh, Jimin thinks. She's speechless.
Minjeong clears her throat, looks away to her side. “Wow. Uh, how do you do that, unnie? That's, like, really cool.”
She's speaking nonsense now, and they both know it. But if Jimin notices, she doesn't say anything about it. “Are you asking me to teach you?” Jimin says quietly. Fuck, why did I say that? I sound like a creep.
“Maybe.”
So it's either Minjeong's playing into this, or she's treating this as a joke. Damn it. “Okay.” What was that? What does that mean???
Before Jimin knows it, she's pressing her lips against Minjeong's and they're kissing. But it lasts three seconds until she backs away, seeing a wide-eyed Minjeong, smiling shamelessly like she didn't just kiss someone without their permission. What the fuck.
“W-Wait.. Did you just..”
Jimin doesn't know what she does next. But she finds herself no longer standing in front of Minjeong, instead she's walking down the hallway and Minjeong is shouting from behind her, her shoes squeaking.
“No, wait, unnie!”
