I don't know why I agreed to go for a drink with her. Maybe I've lost my mind, finally? Maybe I was sick? The unfortunate truth? I was starting to enjoy her company just a smidge. Outside of the courtroom, she wasn't such a huge asshole. She was actually a decent person. Who knew? My mother likes her. My mother who rarely likes anyone likes her. I'm still stunned. I hate to say it, but, I think I'm warming up to her and I find myself attracted--
"Is it me, or is the air kind of tight around here?" Her voice cut through my thoughts and I'm glad because those are thoughts I should not be having especially regarding this woman.
"Maybe if your ego wasn't so big--"
She gasped dramatically at me. "My ego isn't bigger than anyone else's. I just have a lot of confidence, which seems to bother you for some reason."
"Your ego is colossal," I disagreed and brought my shot to my lips, but she stopped me before I could empty it.
"Let's play a game."
"No."
"Come on," she turned on her stool to face me. "For every shot you drink, I get to ask you a question that you must answer truthfully."
I stare at her incredulously. "Why would I ever agree to that?"
"You'll get to ask me back?"
"That is not at all appealing."
She pouted, her eyes growing in size. "Pweeze!"
My throat dried out and my pulse rose at the sight. "Fine," She grins. "but I'm only agreeing because I have nothing else to do."
"That's fine with me."
Staring at my shot glass, I bit my lip, hesitation slowing down my decision to swallow it. Reilly watched me, amused and with a smirk on her lips. She swallowed hers and found my eyes again. Refreshing to see that she feared nothing.
I cleared my throat, thinking up a question. "Where did you move here from?"
"Virginia."
"Why?"
"I got a job offer here."
"Why did you take it?"
"Why wouldn't I? The offer was good, and I heard there was a lawyer down here thinking she was the best. I had to disprove that."
I gritted my teeth, glaring at her, but she only smiled. "Do you have any siblings?"
"No. You?"
"I have a sister."
I studied her. "You have a sister? And still have that attitude?" she scoffed. "Older or younger?"
"Older."
"What's the age difference?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
"Two years."
"That's why. You're basically twins."
"Psssh. We don't get along."
"That's honestly not surprising."
"That was a lie. She's my best friend."
"Hmmm." I played with my shot glass. She watched me. "What's her name?"
"Molly Harris."
"Different dads?"
"Same Dad. She's divorced and she kept her name."
"Okay." The shot glass touched my lip and I paused before lowering it again. I sighed.
She grins, clearly finding this amusing. "Are you that afraid of opening up to someone?"
