Y/N POV:
It was the winter of 1944. I was sitting near a church in Bastogne, and it was snowing, but the fire in front of me was still burning. Suddenly, I noticed a man coming out of the church and walking in my direction.
"Can I sit down?" he asked me and pointed to the free chair beside mine. I nodded after I looked him up and down. Under his helmet, you could see some strands of his black hair and he wore a U.S-uniform. He had a friendly smile on his face.
"I'm Eugene Roe," he said and looked at me, still smiling. I smiled back and said, "I'm Y/N, nice to meet you Eugene." "May I ask where you're from? Oh no, let me guess...", he stayed silent for a bit and then said, "Netherlands." I smiled. "Belgium, but close. How did you find out?" "Your accent." he smiled again. His answer made me chuckle a bit.
"May I ask where you are from?" I asked him the same question and he nodded before answering. "Bayou Chene, Louisiana." "Louisiana, my friend comes from there too." I told him and pointed to a nurse who stood in front of the church and smoked, before I looked back at the fire. "What's her name?" he asked me and I looked up. "Maya," I said. My eyes met his again as he began to talk about his life before the war. After a while, I zoned out and lost myself in his eyes. They were just so pretty and friendly.
"Y/N?" he had an amused grin on his face and held his head slightly tilted. "Oh sorry...I zoned out." I lowered my head a bit. "Don't be ashamed, happens to everyone." I looked at Eugene and chuckled a bit at his response.
"What were you thinking about?" "Just the time before the war and about my brother." I answered and thought of my little brother playing in our garden, which made me smile again. "You have a brother?" "Yeah, he's seven." A pleasant break began, and we both reminisced about good times.
"Hopefully the time after the war will be as good as the time before," he suddenly broke the silence. I just nodded, still staring at the fire.
"Doc!" We turned our heads in the direction of the voice. „Yeah, I'm coming." Eugene yelled back and stood up. "It was nice to meet you, Y/N." he said to me before running to the military vehicle. "It was nice to meet you too, Eugene." I responded smiling, before he left.
*Timeskip: A few days later.*
Eugene's POV:
A few days later I brought Sisk and Penkala, both injured by Krauts, to the church serving as a hospital. "He took a mortar hit. Watch the leg." I told the medical assistants at the hospital before we carried Sisk inside. After we had taken care of the two of them, I had a little break during which I searched for Y/N. Then my eyes met a nurse whom I had seen the day I sat by the fire with Y/N. It was Maya, the girl who had smoked in front of the church.
"Maya," I yelled at her and she turned her head to me. "Where's Y/N?" I asked her. "Your Eugene, right?" she asked and looked sadly down, ignoring my question. I nodded my head. "I'm so sorry, Eugene..." She took a deep breath. "It happened two days ago, outside, during the bombing from the Krauts..." Her voice was almost inaudible. The color drained from my face as she continued to speak. "...she wanted to help an old lady and got hit. She was dead instantly."
When I left the church all I could think about was her. Her smile, the hairband holding back her hair, and her eyes. The eyes I could get lost in.
