Liam leant his head back against the metal wall of the aid car, listening absentmindedly as Andy recalled her disaster of a test to his sister. He had been there when Andy came bursting into Maya's apartment, listing what had happened that day. Liam felt bad for her, as she was clearly trying not to let the fact she was ranked dead last out of all stations affect her ambition.
"But I'm fine." Andy insisted. "I'm still in this thing. I just have to kick as from now on. Every call, every shift."
"It is the sign of a real competitor." Maya replied, a smile in her voice. "I am proud of you."
"I just wish the team would see it that way." Andy groaned. "I know they're gonna look at me with 'loser eyes'." She frowned. "I don't want loser eyes. I don't want pity." She then called to the man in the back. "That includes you, Liam - And your stupid puppy dog eyes."
"Yes, ma'am." Liam grinned up front.
"That's why I'm glad we can do this," Andy continued. "go give out vaccines, not think about it." She inhaled sharply, turning in her seat to the siblings. "What-- what about you guys? How are you feeling about maybe seeing your brother?"
"Well, uh, he's either gonna look at me with 'Long time, no see, I missed you so much, sis' eyes or 'you abandoned me just like everyone else in my life so I hate you now' eyes." Maya kept her eyes on the road, her eyebrows expressive against her face as she talked. "No telling. It should be fun."
"What eyes did I look at you with?" Liam laughs with his question, peaking his head up from the back.
"You looked at me with that stupid, cocky twinkle in your eyes that you had when you thought you were being funny." Maya answered, immediately. "Like you had just one upped me, and played a big joke. I wanted to sucker punch you right in your big, dumb nose - Again."
"Again?" Andy questioned, a raise in her brow.
"The big idiot once thought it would be funny to put bugs in my running shoes before a race." Maya relayed. Shrugging her shoulders. "So, I broke his nose."
Andy laughed, a big and amused smile spreading across her lips and pulling at her cheeks.
"Okay, firstly, you fractured my nose." Liam corrected, a disgruntled look on his face. "And secondly, it was funny. Never knew you could shriek so loud, sis." A coy smirk played on his lips that Maya had a full view from the rear view mirror, irritation spiking in her chest.
"Do you want me to break your nose this time--"
"Alright, enough you two." Andy broke the two up, amused smile barely concealed as she pressed her lips together. "Let's get to where we need to go - without any broken appendages."
The siblings sank back in their seats, effectively scolded. Andy pursed her lips to keep from laughing at the matching frown that pulled at their faces.
The trio pulled in beneath a bridge, the rows of tents and ragged people in their eyesight the moment they stopped. Andy immediately jumped out, bag in hand and ready to get to work. Liam and Maya stayed behind for a moment, eyes roving over all the people there, searching for someone in particular.
"You think he's here?" Maya asked her brother, eyes still glued in front of her.
"I don't know." Liam sighed, heavy and loud. "Let's go find out."
The two shared a heavy look, jumping out of the aid car together and slamming the doors closed.
Liam immediately set to work, plastering a small and kind smile on his face as he carefully and softly spoke to the people around them, guiding them to where they could get their vaccinations. His eyes continued to dart around the camp, looking for one face in particular. He tried to hide his disappointment each time when his search came up fruitless, making eye contact with Maya and seeing her share the look.
