April 1997 - Hogwarts
I begged Draco to tell me what was bothering him. He said he was afraid I would think less of him. So of course I told him that it wasn't true. Dumbledore had warned me not to pressure Draco into telling me, but I had to know. Draco needed to confide in someone. It wasn't good for him to harbor it on his own. So Draco agreed that he'd tell me over spring break while we were at his house. But somehow, he seemed reluctant to bring me home. Like there was something waiting for me there that would end me.
Still, Harry's plead kept crossing my mind. Especially as the students walked to the train to go home for spring break. Jane, Draco, Blaise, and I all sat in the same compartment just like old times. Then I saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione walk past our compartment on a way to find their own. I noted the harsh glances between Harry and Draco.
"I'll be right back," I said, excusing myself. I searched through the compartments looking for my Gryffindor friends. I finally found them and knocked on the door before entering. "Hey, guys," I said.
"Oh, hey, Grace," Hermione said. "Is something wrong?" Harry was avoiding eye contact with me.
"Oh, no," I said. "Um...would you mind if I talked to Harry for a second? It won't take long."
"Oh...sure," Hermione said reluctantly. She stood up to leave and glanced at Ron who had just opened a pumpkin pasty.
"Are you serious?" Ron asked.
"Sorry," I said.
"Come on, Ronald," Hermione said, leading him out of the compartment. I sat across from Harry, unsure of how to start the conversation.
"Grace," he said. "If this is about what happened in the lavatory-"
"No," I said. "It's not that."
"I promise it was an accident. I never meant to do that. And I got rid of the book, I swear."
"Harry, it's not that. I just wanted to tell you that despite what you may think of me and Draco, I really do support you. I support what you're fighting for. But I can't do it."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean I love Draco. And I don't think he has much of a choice in what he's doing. I don't think he's ever really had a choice."
"Have you learned something?"
"No," I sighed. "But even if I did, Harry, I can't spy for you."
"Grace," he said. 'We're fighting a very dangerous war. I need all the help I can get."
"I know," I said. "But I can't fight this war. I can't be a part of it. All I want to do is be there for him. Please tell me you understand."
"I don't," he said. "I'm sorry. I just don't understand. You know something is the right thing to do and you refuse to do it."
"It's not out of spite," I said. "I know you. And I know you can do this without me. You don't need me. But he does." I watched as Harry took in my words, but his face remained stiff. "I'm sorry, Harry," I said as I stood up. "I really am." With that, I stood up and walked back to my compartment. I fell into my chair and let out a sigh of frustration.
