"They're gone. They're not following us." The guy said.
"You sure?" Leo asked.
"Yeah there's no one there." He said.
"Thank God." Anastasia looked up.
"I didn't know you were religious." Leo said.
"Only on Purge night." She ran a hand through her hair and took another drink of Leo's monster.
"Stop drinking my shit." Leo snatched the drink out of her hand.
"Sir are you okay?" The young girl asks Leo. Leo ignores her and looks at the older woman through the rearview mirror.
"You, what was the army doing in your building? Why were they after you? Why were they after you?!" Leo raised his voice. Anastasia put her hand on his leg telling him to calm down.
"I don't know, I don't know!" The woman yelled back.
"Why were you in the streets?!" Leo looked back at the couple.
"Our car just broke down." The man said.
"We don't wanna hurt anybody." The girl said.
"Are you armed?" Leo asked them. "Are they armed? Did you check?!" Leo then turned and started yelling at Anastasia.
"Don't yell at me, asshole." She glared at him.
"No, we are not armed."
"What about you, what were you doing outside? Well both of you?" The young girl asked Leo and Anastasia. The car fell silent.
"I'm not purging, if that's what you think." Anastasia leaned back in her seat and sighed.
Anastasia hated the silent but she didn't turn the radio on because she knew Leo would turn it off. So, she opened her backpack and grabbed the beef jerky out of it. She opened the beef jerky and grabbed a piece before holding it open for the people in the back to grab some.
"Thanks." The couple said. The older lady was too distraught by the sights outside to eat and the girl was just asking a lot of questions.
"Sir, where are we going? Honestly anywhere but here is fine with me." The girl said.
The car then started making weird noises. "God damn it." Leo sat up.
"No, come on, don't do this to me." Anastasia leaned forward and put her head in her hands. "Fuck me." She looked back up and saw smoke coming out of the car.
"We're going nowhere." Leo sighed. Leo parked the car down an alley. He popped the hood and got out of the car. Anastasia followed him.
"We're fucked." She stated the obvious when she saw bullet holes through the engine and other parts.
"I know." Leo ran a hand through his hair.
"I'm sorry, this is my fault. If you hadn't have come back to the apartment to save me then you would be on your merry way to kill that dude." She shook her head and looked down.
"Don't say that. I would have stopped for someone eventually, I have to be the hero. You know that Ana." He closed the hood. Anastasia walked over to the passenger side of the car and grabbed her stuff out of the car. She put her backpack on her shoulder and held the monster in her hands. She had her gun tucked into the waistband of her pants.
"Whoever was in that truck was using armor piercing bullets. The car is dead." Leo told everyone while Stacy leaned against the car and opened her phone. She looked to see if she had any missed calls or texts and so far she had 0 notifications. She sighed, not knowing if that was a good or bad thing.
"So that's it, we're stuck outside on purge night. What are we going to do?" The older woman sighed.
"Can we just hide in here? I mean we have 7 hours until morning." The white girl asked.
Leo looked away from them and made eye contact with Anastasia. She had only ever been out of purge night once so this was new information to her as well. "There's hunters out there with dogs. Sooner or later they're gonna find you. But you do what you want, you're on your own now." Leo told them.
Anastasia furrowed her eyebrows and followed her friend to his trunk. Everyone got out of the car and started to protest.
"What do you mean we're on our own?" The young girl asked.
"Me and Ana never shouldn't have got involved. It's none of our business." Leo looked up at them as he opened his trunk.
"Okay, but you did. So it is your business now alright." The man told Leo. Once they realized that Leo wasn't listening they turned to Anastasia.
"Tell your boyfriend that he can't save us and then leave us like this!" The young girl told her. The rest of the people started agreeing and saying the same thing. Stacy looked back at her friend and rolled her eyes whens he saw that he was ignoring all of them.
"Okay first things first, I'm not his mommy, I'm not gonna tell him what to do. He's an adult and is fully capable of making his own decisions. Second of all, he's not my boyfriend or husband or whatever. He's my neighbor and friend." She rolled her eyes at all of them.
Leo looked back at them and started handing them extra guns that he had.
"You're just giving us guns?" The white girl scoffed. Leo grabbed his duffel out of the trunk before shutting it.
"Where are you going?" She asked him.
"I got somewhere to be before the sun comes up. I can't take you with me. You'll slow me down." Leo grabbed Anastasia's hand and pulled her along with him.
"No we won't, we won't slow you down." They all said.
"Wait so you're really just gonna leave us here." The young girl said.
"Stay off the streets." Leo grabs his gun out of the backseat. "Find somewhere to go." He tells them. The people all started protesting again. The young girl yelled at Leo and the couple yelled at each other. Leo ignored them.
"I feel bad Leo." Anastasia told him.
"We're not their parents Ana. We helped them, they can do the rest." He told her. She shook her head and sighed.
"Wait! I can get you a car! I have a friend in the city not far from here. I've worked with her for years. You get us there safely, you can take her car and do what you have to do." The older woman yelled.
"Can we turn back around now?" Anastasia asked her friend.
"I really hope I don't regret this decision." He sighed before turning around.
"Where does she live?" Leo asked and she said the address. "She'd give me her car?" The lady nodded.
"You sure?" Anastasia asked. The lady nodded once again.
"Make sure." Leo pulled his phone out of his pocket and handed it to the woman. The woman walked over and proceeded to call her friend.
Anastasia ran a hand through her hair and looked at her phone once again.
"Your sister still hasn't called?" Leo asked.
"No, I'm a little worried. Just send her a text letting her know you're fine. She probably feels the same way about you right now." Leo told her.
"You're right." She nodded and texted Mary asking if she was okay. Mary quickly responded and said yes and asked if she was too. Stacy replied with yes it's a long story, i'll tell you in the morning.
