006| THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
══✪══
BILLIE 's Sunday kicked off with a pounding headache, a memento from her hangover. As they made their way to Lorea's mansion, she couldn't stifle her yawns, inviting a mix of playful jibes and critical remarks from Santiago and Tom. They chided her for overindulging the night before, urging her to maintain a more professional demeanour reminiscent of her past missions. According to them, she seemed more reckless nowadays, a trait they found concerning given the gravity of their current mission.Billie remained silent, her focus solely on her task as she braved the pouring rain, rifle in hand. Despite wearing a raincoat, her hands were already soaked and freezing.
Through her earpiece, she heard Benny's voice cutting through the downpour. "It's a good thing these guys are so devout."
Billie shivered, her breath visible in the cold air, as she maintained her position, scanning the area through her rifle's scope.
"Our dad used to say," Benny continued, "When it's raining, it means God didn't need us in church today."
Will's voice crackled over the earpiece. "He also said you go to heaven for the climate and hell for the company."
"Actually, I think Mark Twain said that," Benny corrected, earning a chuckle from Billie.
"Alright, keep the radio clear, let's stay awake here," Tom's directive cut in.
Tom's voice came through after a beat of silence. "How many is that getting in? Count it."
"Seven getting in the van," Frankie's response came in promptly.
"Anybody see Lorea?" Santiago queried.
"Negative," Will replied. "We never saw him come out. The wife and two kids are in with a single driver. The family's left the building. Repeat, family are all clear."
Billie observed as the three vehicles passed through the gate.
"Alright, let's get ready here," Tom instructed just as a new van, accompanied by a car, halted at the gate.
"Damn, Pope, this lady is a keeper," Benny remarked. "Punctual, smart, and brave as shit."
Intently, Benny and Billie watched as Pope's girlfriend engaged in conversation with the guard, who eventually signalled for them to proceed inside.
"She's in," Billie relayed.
"Here we go," Tom said with determination. "Ben, you're first hit. Call when it's secure. With this rain, the guards are gonna be inside."
"Roger," Benny acknowledged before casting a glance back at Billie, silently urging her to hold her position as he proceeded forward, leaving her alone in her post.
