Angel or Phantom? Friend or Monster?

Though I wrote this poem for fun and though it's inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, I believe it still holds a powerful message about the world around us:

Hindered by a mask of death,

the Phantom found himself bereft.

Burning with an inner fire,

he struggled to quell his blazing desire.

The object of his obsessive flame,

a beautiful soprano, fair and tame.

Though her heart belonged to another man,

the Phantom continued with his love-driven plan.

Deep in his dungeon, dark as Hell,

the Phantom was crushed by the despair that fell,

when - upon seeing the plea in his Angel's eyes -

he knew he had no choice but to say goodbye.

For many thought of him as the monster below,

though he was only a lonely Phantom, hiding in the shadows.

But if he should choose to hold his Angel captive,

he would prove no better than those who dared try and entrap him.

For in his kind heart, which was forever at odds with his corrupted face,

Erik Destler simply wished to belong amongst his fellow human race.
