A cozy smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the air in the coffee shop. The sound of people chatting and laughter can be heard throughout the cafe as baristas make coffee for customers. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with customers sitting at small round tables or relaxing on comfortable couches.
Sunghoon has grown accustomed to the mundane routine of his daily life. Although nothing particularly noteworthy happens every day, he finds comfort in the predictability of his routine.
Today was a relatively calm day in the coffee shop, with a few regular customers and a handful of new faces. Despite the reduced workload, the ambiance remained lively, filled with the satisfying sounds of coffee machines churning and the pleasant chatter of customers socializing.
Sunghoon stands there taking orders from the customers and giving them their order as well as filling the cash box.Despite Sunghoon's usually pleasant disposition, today he found himself in a slightly sour mood. His work as a part-time barista was something he normally enjoyed, but today, it added an extra pinch of irritation to his already disgruntled mood.
Sunghoon spoke to the customer in a monotone voice, his eyes fixed on the computer screen.
Sunghoon: "What's your order?" he asked, ready to input the request.
......
As Sunghoon waited for the customer's response, he glanced up from the computer screen, only to be met by a momentary silence. The customer, wearing a white mask and a denim jacket, seemed momentarily confused. Sunghoon raised an eyebrow questioningly, silently encouraging the customer to order.
Sunghoon watches as the customer scans the menu, seemingly struggling to decide what to order. He waits patiently, offering the customer space to make their decision, sensing their indecision.
Sunghoon's patience begins to wear thin as he waits for the customer's decision. Unable to hold back a raised eyebrow, he asks,
Sunghoon: "Is your order ready yet?" His calm demeanor starts to give way to minor signs of irritation.
The guy rubs his neck nervously. He still keeps his eye on the menu. His eyes roam through the menu as he mumbles-
The customer's bewildered remark, "They don't have it here?" catches Sunghoon's attention. It's evident that the customer is looking for something specific that's not on the menu.
Noticing the customer's distinct Australian accent, Sunghoon quickly backs away and turns to tap his friend, Jay who also works there. His curiosity heightens as he gestures for Jay to come closer.
Sunghoon: "Hey, Jay, could you take this customer's order? I'll assist the next person." Sunghoon says, gesturing towards the customer with the distinctive Australian accent. His tone is casual, yet there's a hint of curiosity in his voice.
Jay nods as takes his place. Sunghoon goes to his back and takes his work of making coffee.
The guy sees Sunghoon changing place as another guy appears. He gets more agitated now.
Jay: "Yes?"
???: "ah..Do you have- (says the name of a specific drink that is made in Australia) ?.."
Being an American he's already struggling his Aussie accent.
Jay:"Ah sorry? Can you say that again?"
He says the name again. But Jay still couldn't understand.
Jay: "ah what?- Tree- Uh..what did you say?"
???: gets more nervous. "The (that specific drink). Do you have it?"
Jay: "ah.."Still not understanding- "Can you say it again but slowly."
???: (says the name slowly)
Jay: Smirks "Again." He understood what he said now but messing with him for fun.
??? pov
What the heck. Is he trying to mess with me on purpose??
Jay: "We may not have it-"
Sunghoon interrupts.
Sunghoon: To Jay "You go, I'll take it from here."
Sunghoon was observing his struggle as he thought he should handle it anyway. He thought Jay will be better at understanding him as he's from America. It doesn't seem to work. He just assumed he might understand better. Sunghoon didn't wanted to take his order first because he has really strong Korean accent in his English. Many times foreigners have hard time understanding him.
Sunghoon: "Yes, what did you want?"
???: "It's- Nevermind. I'll take the hot caramel mocha."
He said the first drink that came in his mind not wanting to face any more anxiety while buying juat a coffee. He was feeling intimidated in his new environment that he's not used to.
Sunghoon: Nods "It'll be right up."
Poor Jake, he didn't even wanted that drink.
Sunghoon hands Jake his order as he takes it without any complain. He pays him and leaves.
That wraps up their small interaction.
In the next part we'll get to know more in depth about their situation.
