The day began like any other, but there was an unusual tension in the air. Something felt off, and everyone in the city seemed to sense it, even though they couldn't quite put their finger on what it was. People walked around with a sense of unease, preoccupied with their worries and problems, oblivious to the impending threats lurking around them. The situation had only gotten worse since Xavier Bridger and his new team, The Elites, had been battling the Vaknar soldiers, who had infiltrated G.H.O.S.T. base after base. It was almost like a living nightmare.
The team had just returned to the G.H.O.S.T. headquarters landing pad after their latest bombardment. They looked exhausted, and Xavier couldn't wait to catch a quick nap before the comms blared.
"Agent Maven, you're needed in the meeting room," an unfamiliar voice said over the intercom. Hunter found it odd, wondering who it could be.
"I don't know," Toya replied. "It's weird. I've never heard Maven being called before."
As they walked into the meeting room, Hunter noticed a familiar face in the crowd of people. "Malcolm!" Xavier exclaimed.
"What are you doing here?" Hunter asked.
"I don't know myself! I was on my way to a business meeting until I remembered I never thanked you all for saving me!" Malcolm replied.
Toya and Xavier exchanged confused looks. "Just last month you were planning to 'sue' us for simply saving you," Toya said.
"I was planning on suing them for putting my life in danger, but I have to admit that I'd rather have some protection than money. And I'm glad that you all came out victorious," Malcolm explained.
"Don't thank me yet," Xavier cautioned. "We still have to deal with the Vaknar."
"I still have to deal with them too... but at least, now I have a chance to learn more about them," Malcolm said.
As Malcolm left the room, Toya, Oliver, and Hunter looked at each other, wondering what was going on. "What the hell is going on?" Hunter asked, clearly bewildered.
"I have no idea," Oliver replied. "But with all this weirdness, I feel like something big is happening, and I'm not talking about the Vaknar."
Hunter nodded in agreement. "I have the same feeling."
"A lot of things have been happening lately," Toya said. "We've lost so many friends since the Vaknar started raiding our bases, but I'm not so sure we should be getting too drastic. If anything, I'm surprised that we haven't found a confrontation with Shane yet."
"True, but..."
"Right, but what?" Toya asked.
"I'm afraid this is all just a game to the Vaknar," Xavier said.
"How can you possibly know that?" Toya inquired.
"Because that's what they do."
"Wow, okay, so what are you saying?"
"That they wanted to start a war with G.H.O.S.T., but they've only used deception. And since Atlas and Grim aren't here, we're heavily exposed. They could've killed us easily. We'll probably fall for one trap, and they'll destroy the organization. But they won't fight for real because it will be too dangerous once our superiors get involved. Just like when you first fought them, they used the same trick. They pretended to retreat, then attacked when we were vulnerable."
"That's insane." Xavier said. "Why would they even do that?"
"Because they're after something more than simple world domination," Toya replied.
