It was a boring Saturday. I got nothing to do after spending almost an hour and a half running around the neighborhood, doing curl and sit-ups. Taking a quick bath to get rid of the sweat and sticky feeling. I've done movie marathon on chick flicks. I kept on checking my phone for text messages but found none. Usually, Zareena and I talked on the phone for hours if she can't come over on a weekend. We're the people! Dad and Mom were out too and left a note that they wiĺl be back before dinner.
The silence of the entire house was deafening. I can help but be restless on my bed. Chase was not pestering me today. It suddenly just fell from the face of the earth.
My phone rang and I picked it up from my side. I did not bother to look at the name flashing on the screen. "Get in your car and joined me here in Starbucks." Zareena's voice chirped from the other end.
"Good thing you called me, bestie. I'm beginning to think of dying because of absolute boredom." I said while sitting up on the soft bed.
"Come on, Myah. Fetch me here." Zareena dropped from the call abruptly.
I just changed into a shirt and sneakers while keeping the skimpy jean shorts. Tying my hair in a ponytail, I grabbed my purse and keys with my phone before getting out of the house and driving the hand me down Cayman car.
It took me twenty minutes to reach the destination. It was almost five o'clock in the clock in the evening. The dark is starting to descend and cover the sky. I looked around and saw my best friend on the farthest corner so absorb on her phone with earphone attached to her ear. Good thing there were fewer customers when I lined up to buy Venti size of a java chip frappuccino.
"Hey bestie, what took you so long?" Zareena started when she saw me approached her seat while sipping on my frap like a kid.
"When did you start to be time conscious?" I countered.
"Just right now." She beamed at me.
"Whatever," I whispered after sitting on the cushion opposite her. "So what are we going to do?"
"Let's go shopping, Myah!" Her enthusiasm was beyond Richter scale when she stood up and pulled me along with less care.
I managed to grasp my drinks and almost stumbled out of the coffee store."You're so unpredictable." I uttered when we came in stride on our way to the nearest mall. She just laughed and started talking nonsense. I'll rather be out than be holed up home alone, staring at the four walls of my room.
We were checking out boutiques since Zareena said we need a new dress. She really was talking nonsense and knew for a fact that I still have dresses in my closet that I didn't frequently use.
I was trailing behind her on our way to this small shop when I halted on my tracks. My eyes feasted on the date showing on my phone screen. What's with the date. There should be something important or good about today. I scratched the back of my head, making an effort to discern what was supposed to happen today. Just great! I couldn't figure it out.
Shaking my head, I followed my best friend while she ransacked the dress racks of the little shop. Suddenly Zareena squealed gripping two pairs of dresses in each hand. She threw the ones in her left hand unceremoniously and pouted for me to go into the fitting room first.
I fitted the two mini dresses colored black and blue. I decided to go for the black one coz it was cut simple and elegant. The curtain opened with Zareena wearing a dull green flowing dress. She looked so pretty in it plus she had chosen gold heels to pair with it.
"I'm paying for all of this stuff! Come on, Myah! Let's go back to your house and chill out."I rolled my eyes in exasperation. There she goes again being bossy."You need to choose a footwear for that dress."
"Are you gonna wear the dress you bought?"She nodded in full excitement. I gathered my clothes and was ready to close the curtains but she stopped me along the way.
"You should too."My best friend wiggled her brows. She's in full bossy mode. Very unstoppable.
"Aĺl right, I will, bestie." I sighed and fixed the bodice of my dress since it was strapless. "I saw an equally black pump on the rack."
"We have absolutely the same taste. I think I know what you're saying. I'll get those for you."She disappeared and appeared in less than a minute with the sandals that I liked.
I wore it on my feet, faced the mirror and was satisfied. The dress made me look so glamorous. "You look so beautiful, Myah." She was standing at my back.
"And you're beautiful as well." I smiled and felt giddy inside. "Why are we going back to my house? Can we just go out? Party?"
"It's too early still. We can just watch a movie for the meantime."Zareena's eyes lingered away from me and were attending to her phone, texting someone. Maybe Luke.
"Okay. Let's head home. But we need to pay for our dresses and sandals." I said on our way out of the fitting room.
"That's already done. I took care of it while you were in there." Her face was very much animated.
"Miss Zareena, here's your credit card and receipt." The salesgirl greeted as my friend accepted the card and hurriedly placed it in her small purse.
"I didn't know you had a credit card," I said calmly making our way out of the shop.
"I borrowed it from my mother." Her laughter erupted amidst us. Some guys were looking at us. Others were ogling. Other girls smiled. Others were envious and snobbish.
The drive from the mall back to my abode was full of Zareena's talk about their recent dates with Luke. I, on the other hand, would just do a verbal nod while driving to anything she said.
It was dark already when I parked the car in front of the house. The first floor was lit up as well as the backyard. There were music and conversation.
"Let me fixed your hair." I was about to open my mouth to protest but she was already tagging my hair and I could only grunt when she pulled it tightly. "There you go, Ariana Grande hairstyle."
"Why is my house lit up?" I whispered to myself before getting out of the car.
"Are you not expecting any visitors today?"Zareena replied. Her hands texting away on her phone.
"Nope. That I do not know of."The smell of delicious home cooked meal invaded my nostrils as well as the music growing louder and louder. "Mom!Dad! What's going on here?"
"Myah, we're here in the backyard." came the jolly response from my father.
"Okay.I'm coming."I looked at Zareena who was silently following me and was smiling from ear to ear."What's funny?"I asked her.
"You're funny, bestie!"She said.
"Whatever, Zareena."I retorted while pushing the door into the backyard a little annoyed.
"Happy birthday, Myah!" A chorus of greeting erupted in front of me unexpectedly.
