We sat on a huge flat boulder. Our feet submerged on the water knee deep. Chase and I were both quiet. I looked around and enjoyed the tranquility of the exclusive place. Chase managed to lie down on the cold ground. His left arm folded as a pillow for his head. Eyes closed. I looked at his face, the way his eyes squinted against the light and his nose scrunched when annoyed. His lips not so red yet inviting. His hair disarray but still looks good on him.
" Are you done checking me out?" Chase's eyes opened and all focused on me.
"You wish." I hissed back at him. Then came his melodious laugh that bounced in the air. I looked away from him and zoomed my attention on the opposite side where a couple of butterflies lounged on top of the welcoming flowers. "Stop laughing, Chase."
"I just can't help it. You turned all crimson when I caught you looking at me." He was holding his tummy to keep himself from bursting into another feat of laughter.
"Did you bring me here to embarrass me, Chase?" I uttered seriously to cover up for my stupidity.
"Not at all, Myah. I'm sorry." He automatically turned serious. That's what I like about him, he apologizes right away. "Come here and sit beside me." His hand tapped on the cold boulder or space between us.
"I'm already sitting here beside you." I wrapped my arms below my chest feeling the sudden breeze swept across the lake. I shivered momentarily.
"I want you near me, Myah." My brows in arched when I turned to look at him."Are you scared of me?"
"No." The words came out of my mouth too soon.
"Do you trust me?" The question made me glared at him intensely.
"No, I do not trust you, Chase." I was being truthful to him and my response had him smirking.
"We'll have to remedy that. The sooner the better." He raised his head to looked up the sky. It was not that hot today. The great Mata Hari keeps on peeking in and out of the fluffy clouds. "Just sit beside me, Myah. I'm not going to bite you." This time he was pleading.
Sighing in surrender, I scooted next to him. But he did an unexpected move all of a sudden. He stood up and sat at my back. I was situated in between his legs. He wrapped his right arm around my waist, I yelped in surprise and pulled me close to his body. "What are you doing?" I shouted as my delayed reflex.
Chase rested his chin on my left shoulder. "I'm cold." He whispered in my ears. "Keep me warm."
"Most girls would trade to be in your position right now." Chase teased as I tensed to wriggle out of his hold.
"I'm not most girls." I fired back.
"I know. That's why you're here and not another girl. Please stopped squirming like an eight-year-old kid." He loosened the arm around my waist as his left hand glided on my arm to intertwine our fingers."Relax, Myah, relax."
"How can I relax when you are wrapped around me like this?" His eyes were closed yet the face all glowing with a smile. He leaned back on the boulder calmly.
"No more questions, Myah. You need this as much as I do." He pulled me again to his body. " Tonight, we have to confront our storm."
I didn't say a word of protest or didn't move at all. This should be awkward but a sense of comfort dawned on me. I turned to my side. His arms never left my waist and my hand. He is at peace with this place. My face was nestled in his chest. I can hear the steady beating of his heart, the rise and full of his chest and his regular breathing. I looked up at his face and saw him fast asleep. I can escape this hold he has on me. I sighed and also closed my eyes until sleepiness consumed me.
My eyes flew opened disoriented and found myself inside Chase car back in the school's parking lot. I sat up trying to fix my hair and shirt. Chase stirred from leaning on the steering wheel.
"You're awake. You were sleeping like a baby in my arms back in the lake." Chase's tone was low and his smile was different this time.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" I inquired as I searched for my sneakers discarded on the floor of the car.I'm going defensive mood again.
"You were sound asleep as I've said. I hate to wake you up. So I decided to carry you back to the car. You're one heavy sleeper." Chase reached and tucked a loose hair behind my ear.
I said no word and just exhaled loudly. I watched as the last bell of the day erupted and the throng of students advance towards the gate. What just happened earlier, I asked myself.
"Thank you for accompanying me, Myah." I can feel his eyes boring into the side of me. "Skiving isn't going to happen again, Chase,"I warned him as my laughter were uncontrollable.
"I'm not gonna promise." He laughed as well. "By the way, Myah, don't bring your car to the game.I'll just pick you up if it's okay with you. I enjoy having moments with you in the car."
"Whatever keeps your boat afloat, Chase." I said while reaching for the backpack."I need to go now." He nodded without looking at me."I really hope that won't be our last time on a spontaneous adventure together."
I just nodded. "Pick me up around 6 pm." I slammed the door of his car and jogged towards my own Cayman. I stood by the door and turned to watch Chase's car exiting the school ground.
With emotions running amok in my heart, I got in my own car, deposited my backpack on the next seat and turned on the car. I maneuvered easily and found myself on the highway to the direction of the house. I feel like floating.
