AFTER ANOTHER DAY off and their field trip, the transfers returned to the ranked matches. Davina knew this as she and Apollo headed to breakfast together, earlier than usual despite the pair staying up late sparring. Apollo was sporting a nasty blackeye, as he always seemed to since joining Dauntless.

Davina kept it to herself, but the boy had essentially been her punching bag as she had trained him the past two nights. He was a quick learner, at least that was something, but his build wasn't doing him any favours. He had an aggression to him that had caught her off guard, sharp and violent movements driven with purpose. She recalled his hit to Molly by the gate; if he could learn to actually fight with such movements he'd be a threat.

Breakfast consisted of the pair alone, and for the first time since initiation had begun, Davina didn't find herself missing Edward and Myra, and the familiarity they brought. Sitting opposite Apollo, kicking each other under the table and making snide comments to each other felt like home in a way she had been yearning for in Dauntless.

As they headed to the training room, Molly violently shoved past Apollo, glancing behind him to see Peter and Drew bringing up the rear. The pretty boy had merely offered the new pair a shrug at his friend's actions, but his eyes lingered on the blonde girl as they went their separate ways.

"I'm fucked if I'm against you," Apollo said as they entered the training room, which was about half-full. Thankfully, Four was present for that day. Training was always much more tolerable without Eric in the vicinity.

Davina shot Apollo a look. "I'll go easy," she assured him.

"Don't you dare," Apollo groaned. "For my ego's sake."

But Davina's light eyes had already intently zoned in on the board, at the same time as she heard Will curse, "well, shit," from across the room. She didn't look his way, but something warm had blossomed in her chest.

"Fuck me," Apollo hissed beside Davina.

"No thanks," she said, automatically.

"You wish," Apollo sneered. "Look."

Davina finally looked at names aside from hers, and her heart sunk for her friend as she saw his name written next to Molly's. Apollo's Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed thickly, but Davina wasn't sure what words of encouragement she could offer that wouldn't be false.

"Morning," Edward said as he came up to the silent pair. He looked at Apollo critically, but didn't say anything about the boy that was known to be harsh and run with Peter's crew. "We haven't really met yet," Edward added, politely, offering a small smile.

"Yeah, because you're always with your girlfriend," Apollo said, bluntly.

Edward looked taken aback by the ferocity, while Davina hardly batted an eye, as her best friend looked to her. She shrugged, trying to communicate that Apollo was just like that. "Well, I'm Edward," he continued, but his voice was noticeably tighter now.
