Steven ascended to his apartment building once more, leaving a voice message for his mother."Yeah, you know, I think she really liked me. She loved the flowers. Yeah. Yeah, well, I'm gonna bring her around soon, I think. Yeah, I think you'd love her. Yeah, she's got a great sense of humor. So... Anyway, I'll tell you more about it tomorrow. Love you. Laters, gators."
Jingling his keys, Steven unlocked the door with a satisfying click. As he waved his keys triumphantly, causing the door to buzz and unlock, determination gleamed in his eyes. He retrieved the crumpled paper Marina had given him, a clue to her whereabouts.
Tracking Marina down to the apartment notorious for blasting tunes, Steven knocked on the door, the music tapering off enough to hear the faint tap-tap-tap of his knuckles.
"All right, I turned it down. Are you happy..." Marina's voice trailed off as she opened the door, startled to find Steven standing there. "Oh, you," Marina felt a mix of embarrassment and hurt.
An awkward smirk played on Steven's face as he held up chocolates and flowers. "I can explain."
She rolled her eyes and moved to close the door, but he stopped her. "Marina, please. I just..." He struggled to find the words to explain his situation.
"Let's go," Marina said, stepping out of her flat and locking the door behind her.
Back at Steven's place, he unlocked the door, revealing a sanctuary of books. Marina's eyes swept over the shelves, searching for familiar titles. They settled at the kitchen counter, where Steven presented the chocolates, their conversation flowing as easily as melted caramel. Marina notes that he put effort into buying chocolates and flowers for their date.
"I don't know how to explain it... I..." Steven takes a breath in. " I sleepwalk. I wake up not knowing where I have gone and what I have done. I wake up and my entire body hurts and gaps of the day have gone by."
Marina's gaze flicked towards the bed, following Steven's line of sight. "Is that the reason for the restraint on the bed? And the sand?" Steven nodded solemnly.
She places a hand on him to comfort him. "If it makes you feel better I can tell you my thing." Steven nods again. "I hear voices. I don't know why but once and a while they just gets so loud."
Steven realizes something "So the loud music you play in your flat? That's you..."
" Keeping them away yes."Her gaze drifted to the goldfish in the tank. "Do you want some? All right. You can have some sprinkles." She dribbles some into the tank.
Steven follows and looks at the fish closer " If you're Gus, I'm the bloody Queen of Sheba." They both turn around to return to their stools until Steven drops the chocolates with a thump. He sighs in exasperation as he leans down to pick them up. Something catches his eye. Scratch marks on the wood of his floor. "What's this?" Looking further to the left he sees the same scratches on the concrete.
