The market was alive, a chaotic symphony of colors, sounds, and scents. Marc and Marina strolled through the maze of stalls, where vendors shouted out offers, and the air buzzed with the smell of exotic spices. Marc's attention was caught by a man pouring a deep, crimson liquid into a glass.
"I'll take one," Marc said, his eyes darting around the bustling market. Marina, meanwhile, was already drifting off, curiosity leading her to different booths. She smiled politely, engaging vendors in small talk about their wares, her eyes sparkling with intrigue.
"Hey," Marc's voice cut through the noise. Marina turned to see him watching her with an intensity that made her pause. "Don't wander too far, okay?"
With a small, reassuring nod, Marina resumed her casual exploration.
"Perfect, one, sir," the vendor said, leaning in to fill it."Best juice ever in the world." He grinned as if sharing a private joke.
But as the man bent over, Marc leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm looking for Senfu's sarcophagus."
The vendor froze, his eyes snapping up to meet Marc's, wide with surprise. "Senfu?" he whispered, his voice barely audible. Marc's confirming nod made the man's face drain of color. Without another word, the vendor took a step back, fear flashing across his face.
"I hope you like attention," a voice teased from behind Marc. He turned, groaning inwardly. "Right guy, right place. But you're not Egyptian," the voice continued.
"Layla, what the hell are you doing here?"Marc said, his tone a mix of frustration and relief. "You shouldn't be here."
Layla grinned, sipping wine from a bag like it was the most natural thing in the world." Why? Because my name pisses off a few people in Cairo? Who cares? It's not the locals that I'm worried about."
Marc's eyes shifted toward the rooftops. Konshu stood a spectral sentinel, watching over him. In the opposite direction, Seth lingered, his gaze fixed ominously on Marina.
"Come with me. I'll help you find what you need," Layla said, her tone more serious now.
Marc nodded, but there was something he needed to do first. He made his way over to Marina, who was still haggling at one of the booths.
"We've got to go," he said, grabbing her arm gently but urgently.
Marina blinked in surprise but didn't protest. "Oh, okay. Here, I got this for you." She held out her hand, and Marc frowned in confusion—until he saw what she was offering. A small, bright Mandarin orange sat in her palm, a gesture of simple innocence amidst the chaos.
She grinned, and without thinking, he took it from her. For a moment, the chaos of the market melted away, and he almost smiled. Almost.
