FOUR - ask some damn questions

"We found it in the ashes, we'd never seen it before," Duncan spoke. Violet was getting to work on an invention while the rest of the group sat on hay barrels. Robyn was tempted to see if her commonplace notebook had some answers, but she didn't want to expose herself just yet. She had to wait for the perfect timing.

"Can't be a coincidence, two fires, two halves of a spyglass, plus an extra one." Violet fiddled with a light switch, trying to make some invention.

"I think it's more than a spyglass," Klaus started. "You see, there are dials, similar to the ones I read about for cracking codes."

"Why would our parents have a device for cracking codes?" Isadora questioned.

"And why would ours have the same device?" Robyn added to the question. Sunny was grinding her teeth on a bucket, trying to file it down.

"They must've known each other," Violet concluded, which Robyn had gotten from the start.

"Then why don't we know each other?" Duncan asked.

"It's like they were hiding all this stuff," Robyn said, discretely ripping a piece of paper from her commonplace notebook and pulling out a pen. "I'll take notes, while you keep talking." Violet grabbed the bucket from Sunny while Duncan leaned over to see what Robyn was going to write.

"Maybe they were gonna tell us, but they never got the chance." Violet hung up the bucket with cut outs on the ceiling.

"Maybe they were hiding it for a reason," Klaus wondered.

"You mean because it's dangerous?" Isadora replied.

"Maybe. You're sure you've never heard of Count Olaf?" Klaus asked, double checking.

"I'm sure. But since we've lost our parents, we've seen a lot of things we cannot explain."

"What about you, Robyn?" Duncan questioned, keeping her in the conversation.

"Never heard of that snowman. I can write it on this sheet of paper, could be used in the near future," Robyn discussed, writing down Count Olaf's name on the blank page.

"Don't worry, it has to be connected," Violet said as she flipped a switch. Gears started turning as the lights were tiny creatures, decorating the whole room. "That's a little better. It's scaring the crabs and it gives the place a little style."

"Gotta say, this light is nicer than the ones in my own dorm!" Robyn exclaimed, smiling. The Quagmires smiled, especially Duncan. Klaus turned to Isadora to talk to her.

"At Aunt Josephine's, we found a book that might contain some answers. But we lost it in a hurricane before we could read it." Duncan searched through his notebook.

"Did it look like this?" Duncan found the page and showed the four children.

"Our last guardian locked it in a safe after she lost her wife," Isadora explained.

"I saw that book before I came here, my mom took it away from me before I could fully flip through the first page," Robyn lied.

"If we all saw the same book, there has to be more copies," Violet replied with a gleam in her eye.

"But how can we find one?" Duncan asked.

"Is the school library open?" Klaus wondered. Isadora sighed.

"Not for long."

"C'mon, if we leave now, we might just have enough time to see. If we do get caught, I can bribe Nero easily," Robyn said, standing up and sliding the sheet of paper and pen back in her. "We've got some reading to do."
