Someone was whispering too close to her, not someone; two people and whispering was not the word that she would use to define the second voice because for whatever reason he could not speak lower than...
He?
Elis jerked upright on her bed and her vision swam, it felt like boulders were placed in her head, large ones that seemed to be jumping around but that took the back seat because why in the heavens was she staring at an orc in her bedroom. He stooped like he was trying to fit his too large body into a too little space, his eyes were on her now and he stepped to her side; well shuffled because too little space.
"Are you alright, bride?
"What?" it came out a whisper because Elis was too preoccupied discarding every preconceived notion that Orcs were ugly, or maybe it was just this one. In spite of his green skin, even a blind man could tell he was handsome, a little too handsome. Elis wondered for a moment what she looked like, she was not the belle of the ball but people had called her pretty and she hoped they had not been lying.
"Drink this," a cup was pushed into her hand and she looked up to find Sara looking concerned. She did not notice she was there and again it struck Elis how large the Orc was, he dwarfed Sara very easily and she was the taller sister.
I couldn't fight back if he...
Elis shoke her head to get the negative thoughts out, big mistake because the boulders decided to do somersaults, she winced bringing her free hand to her head.
"Bride, drink please. It has medicine in it," Zorg nudged her hand pushing the cup closer to her lips.
He was annoyed he could do nothing about her pain but wait, he had spent some time outside but he was worried because she had hit her head when she fell and he had no idea what was going on with her so he came in and stalked around the door to her bedroom until his bride's sister let him in. She was awake now and so were all of Zorg's fears.
Would she refuse the marriage or reject him? Was she going to be terrified of him?
The thought of that broke his heart. He did not want her afraid of anything especially not of him but she listened to him and brought the cup to her lips and took a sip immediately scowling her pretty face at the taste of it. Elis pushed the cup away shaking her head. She hated anything bitter.
"You have to finish it," Sara encouraged her.
"No," Elis began to say before Zorg interrupted her. "I'll give you something sweet if you do" he smiled at her, extremely happy at the chance to begin proving what a loving and attentive partner he was.
Both women blinked, surprise evident in their features as he reached for a small satchel tied to his waist. He pulled something out and unwrapped it from its paper bag. It was a bun with what looked like a red filling. He held it out to Elis and it smelled so sweet that she reaching for it before Sara smacked her hand away.
"The medicine first." She said and rolled her eyes at the Orc when he growled. Elis pouted but she shut her eyes and lifted the cup dowing the contents in one go, the scowl on her face deepened and as Sara took the cup from her hand, Zorg put the bun in it. She sniffed it lightly and a memory of her mother telling her to stop smelling her food flitted across her mind before she bit down on the bun.
The taste exploded in her mouth, it made her toes curl and a low moan escape from her. The bitterness at the back of her tongue was gone replaced by sweetness that was perfect and not overwhelming. She had never had anything like this and was pretty sure there was honey somewhere in it. she shut her eyes again savoring the taste and so she did not see Zorg rearranging his clothes or mutter an excuse about being busy before fleeing the room.
"What's wrong?" Elis opened her eyes when Sara unsuccessfully tried to stifle a chuckle.
"Oh nothing, I don't think you have to worry about the orc the way you think"
"How so?" Elis watched her sister begin to smoothen a dress that seemed to appear out of nowhere, another thing she failed to notice because of the orc.
"What is that?" Elis jolted upright. "That's a dress, a new dress.
"Yes it is," Sara chuckled as she picked the dress and brought it to her sister who stuffed the rest of her bun into her mouth, absolutely flabbergasted that there was a new dress in their house.
"It's for you," Sara said and Elis almost fell over.
"What do you mean? You bought this? But how? Why?"
The last thing Elis wanted was to be more of a burden and she seemed to excel at always being just that. She made her mother and sister worry about her so much and this marriage was her way of attempting to gain control of her life and finally begin to live without being so terrified of everything she could not predict.
She reached out to feel the dress and it was the softest cloth she had ever touched and she knew it would feel as good as it looked, it was silk which probably cost a fortune. A fortune they did not have.
"I can't accept this, you have to give it back and use the money for you and Matthew?"
"Don't be silly, Ellie" Sara chided, going to hang the dress back. "I wasn't the one who bought it but I wouldn't send it back either way"
"It wasn't you?" Elis asked, not sure how to feel about that bit of information.
"Who then?"
"Zorg did."
"Zorg? who's Zorg?" Did they have a long lost brother she didn't know about. Elis was confused because her sister was giving her a really strange smile.
"The orc, you husband-to-be, the one who just left," Sara smirked like she had been given the honor to deliver the best news of the millennium. "That's Zorg"
Elis stared at her sister for a minute like she had gone mad before Sara burst out laughing at her expression, clutching her stomach and falling over on the bed.
"This isn't funny Sara," Elis snapped, her confusion was frustrating her, she hated not knowing what to feel. "I don't understand"
"What's there not to understand," Sara had not been sure it would be a good idea when Elis accepted the proposal but all it took was a shy, stuttering orc holding a dress to change her mind.
"He bought you a nice dress to wear because he wanted to."
"But why?"
"You'll have to ask him," Sara shrugged, getting off the bed. "It'd make a great conversation starter, don't you think"
Elis's mouth fell open. She'd completely forgotten that she would have to speak to him. She would have to say words to him, have entire conversations. She would be his wife, why did she not think this was a possibility.
Oh gods I'm doomed.
