Dust swirled up as you took a step to the side, your ankle twisted, muscles tensed. You could feel the force of your kick throughout your leg as you lunged. Sweat beaded from your forehead.
A fist came flying at you. Just in time, you managed to wrap your leg around your attacker's arm, shifting your weight and bringing yourself to a safe distance.
Small stones and sand made it difficult for the flat soles of your shoes to grip. Holding your breath, you threw your head back and bent your knees.
Not a second too soon, as a spear chased across your face, so close you could feel a rush of air. But this was no ordinary spear.
The weapon was moulded entirely from ice. When it hit the ground, the surface shattered into a thousand tiny pieces, each one as sharp as a blade.
Quickly, you managed to turn on your own axis, smashing the pieces you couldn't avoid. Icy, unnatural cold bit into your palms. The skin tightened in places and a sharp pain made your fingers curl.
Inhaling sharply, you pushed the feeling of skin peeling from your flesh back into the dark of your mind.
Your gaze jumped over your shoulder. A shadow settled over you. It was like a beast that wanted to devour you in one piece.
White clouds of breath caressed your cheek.
Your fingers twitched, clenched into fists. You took a swing.
Unimpressed, the giant of a man moved aside. He didn't even take a proper step, just bend his head to the side. His right hand rose, the size of a bear's paw. Blue, steaming ice grew over the knuckles.
The hairs on the back of your neck stood up. He lunged, but you managed to jump to the side in time. His punch dug into the dusty ground with full force, causing it to tremble. Cracks grew.
But he remained stuck for a second.
Seizing the moment, you lashed out and punched him twice in the temple, raising your leg and digging your heel into his spine with such force that he went down with a grunt.
But he didn't give in. Not yet.
Ice grew from his back, stretching its steaming fingers towards your shoe and eating into the black fabric. Just in time, you pulled your leg back to prevent the freeze from restricting your movement and jumped back.
Despite his impressive size, he managed to swing himself smoothly back to his feet.
"Hmpf!", a deep, raspy voice leaked out of the black mask with silver fittings that covered half his face.
A strand of black hair fell into his face. He didn't stop there. Instead, he came at you with deliberate steps, each one a threat in itself.
Your shoulders tensed. Goosebumps grew on your back as small chunks of ice crumbled from the fabric of your trousers.
Thoughtfully, your foot traced a circle across the floor as you returned to your waiting fighting stance. Everything depended on his next move.
His steps slowed. One of his curved, black eyebrows raised. Then he narrowed his brown eyes. He could sense the trap.
Of course, after all, he was the only fighter who was your equal. Or you were the only fighter who was his equal. No matter how one looked at it, you and the Lin Kuei Grandmaster were two sides of the same coin.
Sometimes it landed on tails. Sometimes on heads. Yet it was always the same coins.
But this time he was determined that it would land on his side. Last time you had been successful, had hurt his pride. He would show his gratitude. And next time you would knock him back down to earth.
It had always been that way and perhaps it would always stay that way. Until the day one of you would die so that the survivor could take the place at the top.
At the thought, a thin smirk formed under your violet mask, which was studded with silver and gold.
He finally woke up from his stupor, released you from the tension of uncertainty and slowly approached you. Ice smouldered at his fingertips.
Before you could blink, the first arrow made of ice flew. The tip missed your cheek by a hair's breadth, but cut the strap that tied the mask to your face.
It fell to the ground with a click. You didn't have time to grab it back, because he jumped forward and tried to kick you in the chest.
You jumped back, blocking his leg with a swipe to the side and stopping at the sensitive points in the crook of his arm. He gasped at the blow, but seized the moment and grabbed you with his left.
With full force, it pulled you off your feet, your back hit the hard ground and icy cold fingers wrapped around your throat. It took your breath away.
In a flash, you pushed your legs between you, pushing yourself away from his chest with your feet so that he couldn't restrict your movement with his weight.
Your eyes met. The brown of your eyes gleamed with a certain victory. But the (E/C) of your eyes reminded him never to underestimate you.
Your fingers curled, gripping his wrist. Skin met skin. Despite the ice, you could feel the warmth of his body, the blood pumping through his veins, the heaviness of his breath.
A tingle spread through your fingertips, crawled up your fingers, through your arms until it exploded in your chest and flowed into every corner of your limbs.
The conviction that victory was his had already solidified in his body. He became careless. And at that very moment, you reached for the power coursing through your body and turned it against him.
Inhaling sharply, his whole body suddenly stiffened. Muscles twitched, fingers curled. Concentrated, you stared at him, sensed what was flowing through his body and reached out to command it.
Trembling with resistance, he tried to defend himself against your influence, but at that moment his own flesh was his greatest enemy.
You had him completely under your control.
When his grip on your throat was loose enough, you slipped out, swung your legs over his massive shoulders and sat astride his back.
In a swift movement you pulled a blade from your belt to press it to his neck.
"Won.", you smiled.
