"Will the soul stealers be completed on time, Quan Chi?", Shang Tsung's voice sounded just the way you had imagined it.

Every word oozed of confidence yet was as smooth and charming as a snake in the grass. He spoke wisely, intelligent, and everything that left his mouth sounded like a charm.

"Yes.", Quan Chi seemed all too pleased. "Our benefactor's guidance has proven most helpful."

"If we break it, we'll halt their construction.", Kuai Liang stretched his head to gain yours and Bi Han's attention.

The older brother nodded.

"Agreed.", he said and rushed from his place of hiding.

Your muscles flinched, yet your legs refused to carry you into battle. Once more there was this pressing feeling that whispered into your ear.

Something wasn't right.

Your gaze jumped to the door, back into the darkness of the tunnel. Perhaps it would have been wise to go and warn Tomas. He was out there all on his own and with no clue of what was going on.

It was also possible that Shang Tsung had come from outside after overpowering the grey ninja. Maybe he battles with death in this very moment.

Again you turned your head to see how the situation developed.

Both sorcerers had been taken by surprise. Quan Chin managed to utter a chant before Bi Han had reached him. Green mist and skulls poured from his fingers, creating a wall of death.

But the grandmaster wasn't impressed. With his arm covered in ice he charged at the skulls and made the bones shatter into thousands of pieces.

Green mist caressed his cheeks before he managed to get close enough and trap Quan Chi in a fight.

Kuai Liang had taken on the other threat. Shang Tsung hadn't been as quick with his defence and was now fighting the Lin Kuei brother hands on.

However he was just as quick on his feet, slid a few steps back, dodged a kick and fought his way back to Kuai Liang.

As they fought, the yellow ninja managed to land a hit hard enough to make Shang Tsung falter in his stance. Blood spilled from his nose as he sought stability on a stone pillar.

Your fingers tingled.

All you needed were a few drops of this liquid gold and the sorcerer would be yours.

But the fight wasn't won yet. While Kuai Liang won the upper hand in his fight, Bi Han took a few hits. Unimpressed he slid across the stone floor, swiftly and agile and managed to bring some distance between him and the enemy.

He wasn't hurt, at least not visibly on the outside.

"Ah, the Lin Kuei.", Quan Chi smiled widely, exposing two rows of yellow stained teeth that made a strong contrast to the ashy white of his skin. "We have been expecting you."

Bi Han narrowed his eyes.

"Were you told also to expect defeat?", he asked, his voice shaking with force while shards of ice formed spears to his feet. "This ends no other way."

Again, a shiver chased through your flesh, made your bones curl.

Why did it feel like Quan Chi and Shang Tsung weren't the threat here?

There was something else. Somewhere else.

One last time you turned to look at the fights.

Shang Tsung hasn't admitted defeat yet. He still tried to wrap Kuai Liang up in his green, poisonous looking magic while the other burned every attempt to the ground.

Bi Han had managed to chain Quan Chi to the ground with a field of ice. As per usual of him he fought with his bare hands, hard punches and a kind of brutality that seemed unnecessary even in this kind of moment.

It seemed that the fates were in your favour.

No one had noticed your presence yet, all they believed was that Kuai Liang and the grandmaster had come on their own. So you decided to use this to your advantage and slipped away quietly.

Neither of the brothers would need your aid. It seemed they would be successful anyways.

Gold coins gathered to your feet as you snuck past stone pillars and treasures of immense value. With your head pulled in you remained in the shadows.

The noise and grunts of the fights faded into the background as you made your way deeper into the cave only to discover that it was an entire village trapped in stone.

Houses stretched out from the stony flesh of the mountain, roofs shielded rooms from weather conditions that could have made their way into the cave through a large hole.

It almost seemed like an entire civilisation had been lost to this place. Or had been created in secret here.

The tingling in the back of your head only grew as you passed statues that resembled warriors, very similar to the terracotta statues of a certain Chinese emperor.

Your eyes scanned the surrounds. No one else was around. The entire village of stone felt empty and not alive at all.

Perhaps that wasn't quite right.

Out of curiosity you stopped in front of one of the statues to examine the face. Details could be found, expressions and very strong features of a real person.

Magic made your blood boil. A song filled your ears.

For a few breaths you withstood the curiosity before reaching out and placing your palm on the stone chest plate of the statue.

All at once your body started to cramp in fear. Eyes wide open, a gasp on your lips you stumbled away to hide against a wall.

There was no heartbeat inside these beings, no brain or intelligence. But you could still clearly feel the familiar sensation of blood pumping underneath your fingers.

These statues were alive, fuelled by blood.

"How is this possible?", slipped off your lips as you dares to get closer once more.

Again, you needed to touch it, just to make sure you weren't imagining things, weren't crazy. But no, the feeling of blood was something you knew all too well.

As your fingers curled, allowing your magic to run free, the statue awoke to life. Its head turned, eyes as empty as the ones of a mere objet.

You pulled back, reached for one of your knifes and buried the blade inside the stone. Cracks spread across the chest.

And as you pulled back a thick gush of red poured from it.

These statues had once been made by sealing humans inside stone to make them eternal servants. This was the doing of black magic through and through.
