Screaming his lungs out, Tomas struggled mid air as he fell all the way towards the ground. Icy wind made the grey strands of his hair dance.
Your heart stopped in your chest. Magic raged and screamed inside your blood but there was no way you could be of any help.
You had been born to destroy not to save.
The ground came closer and closer. Tomas managed to turn, his chest now facing the ancient stone walls while his fingers desperately tried to find something to hold onto.
But the surface was too smooth and the tips of his fingers only started to bleed at the friction.
In one last attempt to save his life he pulled out one of his curved kunai and rammed the blade into the walls. His weight pulled him down, leaving a long crack inside the stone.
Dust and small pebbles obscured his face but you could still hear how frightened he was, screaming and huffing. Panicking, he held onto the kunai for dear life.
You almost couldn't breathe.
Slowly, dangerously close to the edge of no return he finally came to a stand, remaining handing in the air. Relief made your legs go weak.
Immediate Kuai Liang rushed to the edge to look if his brother was alright. Your hand reached out, trembling with adrenaline and the worry of loosing Tomas forever.
Bi Han grabbed it, wrapped his fingers around it to squeezed gently. You trembled all over. This mission had barely begun and the first death had only be avoided narrowly.
Was this what Liu Kang had wanted to say?
Don't let the sorcerer take away our allies.
Again, this deafening screech filled the air. Your gaze jumped up, anger and hate burning in the (E/C) of your eyes.
With a deep breath you focused on the outline of a person that chased through the air. Your muscles tensed. Magic tingled between your fingers.
It wasn't wise to use your powers this early on. No one knew the extend of the resistance or what other unpleasant surprises Shang Tsung held in stock.
You needed to remain sharp for as long as possible until a moment came that required for bigger measures. Swiftly, you pulled out one of your blades, let it dance between your fingers.
Bi Han got ready next to you.
"It's charging right at us!", you warned.
Another bloodthirsty scream made the ice below your feet tremble. And within the next second the strange creature chased from the air. It struck Bi Han with full force, swept him off his feet and a few seconds across snow and stone.
You jumped to the side, dodged a pair of leathery wings and cut upwards. Screaming, the creature shed a few drops of blood.
Bi Han fought it off, grabbing it by both shoulders and performing a body roll in which he threw it from him with all his might.
You rushed to his side, blood dripping from the tip of your blade.
It was only then that you realised how human this creature looked, a woman with long red hair, two legs and arms. Only her teeth were oddly sharp. A pair of wings sat on her back.
"A demon from the Netherrealm?", you asked, eyes narrowed.
With a grunt, Bi Han got back to his feet. Ice started to vapour from his knuckles.
Another person appeared, a woman dressed in the same black that her hair had. Only a palish blonde strand framed the scar across her face.
"Argh!", the demon snarled, holding the wound that you had inflicted on her.
"As a boy I heard tales of battles against your kind. I had thought them all tall ones.", Bi Han said to the winged woman as he cracked his shoulder to release the pressure in it.
You remembered these tales, stories that his mother had told all three of you for bedtime. They were about creatures from a place called Vaeternus. Their kind were deemed demons but a better fitting description would have been the Earthrealm equivalent of a vampire.
The woman rose from the ground again, a fierce look on her face. She did have quite the sharp teeth, almost like fangs. As she took a fighting stance you noticed her nails. Or rather claws.
That meant you had to stay away from her mouth and out of fists range. Both not ideal without using your powers.
Blood dripped from her wing. The sound made your ears flinch and your magic scream. She was already injured so you wouldn't have to get too close. All you needed was a bit of that blood.
Your eyes traveled down to your blade. It was conveniently stained with the red elixir of life. Which meant you didn't even have to get close to her.
Then again, she wasn't alone. And if you used your powers now chances were high you'd be out cold for the rest of the mission.
You didn't want to risk it. Especially not since Liu Kang had made clear that the true, one and only target was Shang Tsung. Without his mischief everything else would just fall apart.
"All Earthrealmers will soon know of Vaeternus.", the winged woman hissed. "My realm starves and it's coming here to feed."
She approached.
Out of reflex, you took a different stance, blade raised in warning while Bi Han formed a spear from his ice. Small shards scattered around the place as he smashed the top to sharpen it.
Your blood boiled. With a smirk, the other woman approached as well. You examined her for a split second before taking another position at the other side of the grandmaster.
"This lady seems rather unnoticeable.", you said. "I'll deal with her. Make sure to take out this demon."
Agreeing, he hummed and nodded.
Both your enemies got into position. The woman you had chosen as your opponent seemed to be quite amused by your determination to succeed over her.
In an almost mocking way she tilted her head.
"I've heard stories about the grandmaster's most trusted.", she purred, a smile on her black painted lips. "I always wondered if the brother wasn't jealous. Or why he didn't try and overthrow you to secure his own position."
"Enough talking!", you hissed. "You came here to fight."
