1 new message from (Sam W.)

I groaned and I felt terrible, but these guys were texting me wanting more than friendship. I wasn't into that. I needed friends, not boyfriends.

Sam: Hey beautiful (:

I smiled a little. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the attention I was getting, but it wasn't satisfying. I didn't get butterflies, didn't feel the heat rising to my cheeks, and didn't giggle like a little school girl. I wanted someone who could make me do that. Someone to make me feel special.

Me: Hey c:

I was laying in my unmade bed waiting for my best friend Ruby to text me back. We made plans to go see a scary movie tonight at eight and it was already seven. My phone buzzed again and I got excited only to be disappointed again.

1 new message from (James O.)

James: Wanna go out with me 2night? Im having a party.

Me: No, I'm sorry. I already have plans.

I tossed my phone on my bed that was cluttered with studying papers and decided to take a look at what I was wearing to make sure I looked okay; I had on a black classic rock band t-shirt and some ripped, dark shorts. My hair was down for the most part, but I had two braids that met in the back making me look like a hippie. My makeup was a bit much for just seeing a movie, but I was excited. Black-winged and thick eyeliner laid atop my eyelids, accompanied by some black mascara. It seemed like a lot, but I didn't wear much else, just some cherry flavored chap stick. I quickly reapplied my chap stick and grabbed my phone.

Ruby: On my way

Ruby: I hope you're ready

Ruby: Charlie!

Ruby: I'm here. Hurry your ass up

Ruby: Helloooo?

"Damn!" I muttered. I quickly slipped on my leather jacket, grabbed my wallet and ran downstairs and out the door, but not before hugging my dad goodbye. Like always, he tells me to be safe and not to have too much fun.

I hop in Ruby's car to be greeted by the look. The look was almost deadly. "I'm sorry, Ruby. . ." I said innocently, but she just kept looking at me, not saying a word. "Ruby, come on," I sighed, "it wasn't even that long." I looked down at the last message she sent me.

Ruby: Helloooo?

Delivered at 7:30. I looked at the current time. It was 7:40.

I looked back up at my lovely friend and smile, "Don't be mad, Rubes. I was fixing my appearance for you. You know how nervous I get when I'm going out anywhere." Just then, there was a crack in her stern look. Ruby couldn't hold back and she smiled so wide and started laughing her ass off.

"Maybe I should be an actor, d'you think?" her Australian accent was to die for. I kind of melted every time she spoke, but in a best friend way. I rolled my eyes and playfully smacked her arm. "Oh, now, don't be such a sour puss, love," she giggled.

I laughed, "Just drive, you ass."

When we arrived at the movie theatre, Ruby and I walked close together. People scared me and she made me feel safe. We got to the ticket booth and she asked for two tickets to see the scary movie. I went to hand the man my money when Ruby smacked my hand away, smirking. "You know better, d'you not know who I am?" she asked with wide eyes.

I looked down at my feet and whispered an apology. As an acceptance, Ruby wrapped her tattooed arm around me and walked me to the snacks and popcorn. "Pick a candy, any candy. We can share a large popcorn and the candy we each pick, okay?" I nodded at the proposal and she lifted my chin up with her index finger. "Stop pouting and pick a damn candy, love."

I laughed lightly and took a long look at her. She was so pretty. Her dark, short hair that looked so touchable. Her lips were very plump and almost kissable. Her eyes were this perfect shade of green and it was almost indescribable the way she made me feel. I was so glad that she was my best friend.

"Charlie, are you okay? You look like you're about to kiss me, love." She chuckled. I was not about to kiss her, was I? No, I wasn't.

"Yeah, yeah, sorry. I was just thinking."

"Oh, what about?"

"How amazing you are to me." I slipped. I didn't mean to say that aloud. I quickly diverted my attention from her to the candy in front of me, but I could feel Ruby's eyes burning into the side of my face. I blushed vigorously. I decided on Twizzlers™ and Ruby decided on M&Ms. It was the perfect combination. Both fruity and chocolatey.

As we walked to the theatre we were assigned to, I held the candy and my drink and Ruby the popcorn and her drink. We took a seat in the middle, but more to the back. There weren't many people in the theatre, so I was thankful for that.

When we sat down, I felt a bit nervous; I wasn't sure why though. I mean, it was just Ruby. We do this type of thing all the time. This time was no different. Or was it? Something had been going on lately and I became seriously confused by it all. I was feeling things I never really came to terms with before and it was opening doors I never thought about for me and I wasn't sure how I felt about it. It scared me to death, to say the least.

I didn't want to think about such things at the time, so I shut it out. I wanted to enjoy the movie.

"Are you ready for this shit?" Ruby asked excitedly. I nodded happily. She examined my face for a few moments before saying, "Love, are you alright? You look troubled."

I sighed, "I'm fine. You know me, I'm always okay."

"Yes, but that's what worries me," she leaned close to me and kissed my forehead. I smiled a genuine smile and blushed a bit.

"Y-you don't need to worry, Rubes. As long as I have you to keep me from spiraling, I'm okay."

What was going on with me?
