There I was in the back seat of my mother's car, I couldn't believe I was now out of junior year in high school. I was a senior!. After seeing my good grades, mum decided to get me whatever I wanted and I couldn't believe all I could say was a new iPhone-my old phone fell into the lake two weeks ago, don't even ask me how.
"Sophie, your grandmother would be coming over for the holidays tomorrow," said Sophie's mum,Grace. A holiday with grandma involved makes me feel like the holiday isn't enough,it also means my mum's going to be busy throughout the holiday. She's a lawyer.
"I'll also be super busy most of the holidays, I apologise if I'm not giving you enough attention, but you know how I love my work,"Grace said sweetly.
"Mum,no worries. You give me attention like crazy. Nobody will come home 9 in the night and still have the energy to scold a child for not eating, for sleeping late and oversleeping, "Sophie said as she encouraged her mum.
"I love you, sweetheart. You just always have the right words at the right time,"Sophie's mum said as she teared up.
"Mum,you can't drive and cry. You have to pick one, and I think you should pick driving,so we can get home and eat all the food we bought, " said Sophie humorously.
"I meant to say you had the right word most of the time, and thanks for reminding me that you had to make me wait at the restaurant to get food when we have food at home "said Grace jokingly.
"A girl's got to buy food when she sees them,"said Sophie with a tinge of humour detected in her sweet voice .
"...and a mother's got to stop her daughter when she's wasting money,"said Grace.
Mum doesn't like getting food outside. She says when you have the ingredients cook the food and she mostly cooks local Nigerian dishes, which are totally amazing, by the way, but I can't eat those all the time. My mum respects tradition so much, or we can my family and friends respect tradition so much.
Sometimes, I feel like a rebellious child, I think people should just modernise, how can a child be so different from a parent in that aspect but then we have the mutation of genes, although I think the mutation of genes shouldn't get to that level, who am I to science.
"Sophie, we are home,"Grace said, pulling Sophie from her trail of thought. "I can't wait to eat the crispy chicken and then ice cream and go to sleep,"Sophie told Grace with excitement evident in her sweet voice.
"Alright, calm down, Sophie. Let's take everything we bought inside the house, "said Grace, who was trying to tune down Sophie's excitement.
"Okay, mum," said Sophie, tuning down her excitement to zero.
The next day, by noon, Grandma was already here, and my holiday just started. Fun was calling me,all I could hear was, "Sophie, Sophie, come over here and have fun. It's the holidays ,"
My name is Sophie Oluwaranti Adeyemi, and I'm an African. American by birth, African-Nigerian to be precise by my parents. I'm a dual citizen, and I love that part of me.
