"I'm Professor McGonagall, your professor for transfiguration," She comments, looking over at the students.
"Behind these doors is the Great Hall, where you will find your future housemates who are waiting for you. The start-of-term banquet will begin soon, but before you take your seats, you must be sorted into one of our four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Your house will be something like family while you are here. You will sleep in your house dormitory, have classes with the rest of your house, and spend your free time in your special house common room.
"Each house has a special history, and all have produced outstanding witches and wizards. While here, you may earn or lose house points that go towards winning the House cup, an annual competition here at Hogwarts that is greatly honored."
With that, Sam could hear clapping coming from the other side of the door, and her chest instantly filled with pride. Whatever the sorting ceremony required, she was ready. Or at least, she thought she was.
Then something strange happened. At least 30 people arrive, their skin completely white and transparent in nature. Floating off the ground, Sam knew them to be the school ghosts, something Molly talked fondly of. The ghosts floated gracefully through the walls into the Great Hall, as some students watch in awe while others merely look on to peek through the doors.
"All right!," Professor McGonagall announced, making every student instantly straighten up and eagerly listen. "Line up in a single file and follow me."
She opened the large doors, and now Sam knows why it's called the Great Hall. Tables stretched to both ends of the room, with decorated runners and silverware cluttering the tables. At the end, stood several witches and wizards who all looked quite formal in their elegant robes and hats.
As McGonagall led the first years down the main aisle towards the front of the hall, Sam couldn't help but stare at the ceiling, fascinated that there appeared to be none. The walls seemed to merge with a beautiful nebulous sky, with multiple stars twinkling on their own and candles that floated with no holders. Peering over her friends, it seemed that they experienced the same amazement she had, not taking their eyes off the ceiling.
Almost tripping over the small steps at the front, McGonagall lined up the first years right in front of the professors, looking out over the Hogwarts students. Smiling awkwardly, she tried to find her brothers, whose red hair popped out in a sea of royal blue, only they seemed to already be engaged in conversation with their friends.
Sam was feeling slightly nervous now that she was to be sorted in front of all these people. Hearing a side door open, she winced, not quite ready for the beast in front of her.
