The soreness on her shoulder slowly faded as the day went on. Y/n's cat, Noki, curled and walked around Y/n's legs. She stood at the sink, rinsing the dishes and loading them into the dish washer.
Noki meowed up at Y/N, trying to get her attention. Y/N's eyes went down to see the kitty looking back at her.
"Hold on, I'll get you something in a second," Y/N said. She wiped her hands with a hand towel and went to the cupboard to get some dry kibbles. Noki continued to curl around Y/N's legs, making her stumble a little.
Y/N sighed, stepping over Noki and walking around to the food bowl. She sprinkled some of the dry food in the bowl, which Noki gladly chomped at. She set the container on the counter and stole a glance at the staircase.
There hadn't been a sound from upstairs in a while. Perhaps the creature had just left without saying goodbye. Or maybe he was just hiding somewhere else.
Y/N peered into the stairway, eyes on the door. Figuring a peek wouldn't hurt, Y/N made her way to the attic. She carefully turned the door knob, looking inside before she opened the door. Noki slipped past Y/N, squeezing through the door.
"Noki!" Y/n said firmly, trying to grab Noki before she got any further. Noki was able to slip past her hands and jump onto one of the boxes. Y/N went after her, trying to get her to come back down the stairs.
Y/N stepped over boxes, heading deeper into the attic as she chased after the damn cat. The back of the attic was a bit darker than near the door, so Y/N had to squint to be able to see.
"Noki!" Y/N called out in a harsh whisper. Noki ran along the edge of the wall, chasing a mouse, which she caught. Y/N grimaced and stood in front of Noki, who held the limp mouse in her mouth.
A sigh escaped Y/N's lips, and she leaned down to pick up Noki, but she froze. Her eyes caught on the almost-featureless mask that was staring back at her. The color drained from Y/N's face, and she stumbled back a bit.
He was still here.
The creature stood up, his emancipated body hiding in the shadows of the attic. He towered over Y/N, looking down at her. Yn's heart beat in her chest like a drum, and she froze in fear.
Noki, however, spit the mouse out in front of him with a meow. He looked down at the dead mouse, then the cat, deciding what to think of such a thing. He crouched back down to be eye level with Noki. Noki decided to walk closer to him, but he wasn't against it.
He let the cat rub its fluffiness against the side of his mask for a few seconds before he gently pushed the cat away. He looked back at the mouse with his void-like eyes before pinching it by the tail with two fingers and offering it out to Y/N.
Y/N shook her head. "No thanks," she said quietly, taking a step back. The being tilted his head at her refusal. He ended up holding the mouse in front of his own mouth and eating it whole. Y/N got another peek at his large teeth and black tongue. The nervous knot in Y/N's stomach got even worse. She looked from Noki to the pale blue face.
"Who are you...?" She asked, taking a cautious step back. He seemed to ponder what she said for a moment before responding.
"... Jack..." He said back, just as quiet as Y/N. His voice was a bit raspy from behind the mask, most likely from not speaking after such a long time. Y/N was a tad bit surprised he could speak.
"I'm Y/N," she said back in a more normal speaking voice. She looked over Jack's rough appearance before a thought struck her. "The other night, why did you bite me?" Y/n asked.
Jack didn't respond immediately, but his slim fingers grazed over the cat's fur, giving it some gentle pets.
"To... taste," Jack said in a hushed voice. A shiver crawled up Y/N's spine. She didn't know whether to run away screaming or to thank him for not eating her alive. Y/N glimpsed around the attic anxiously.
"W-Why did you come to my house?" Y/N asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Food," Jack said in a plain whisper. Y/N's expression went slack.
"You could have just come downstairs instead of creepin' around up here," Y/N remarked, gesturing to the dusty, old boxes. Noki jumped on top of one of the boxes near Y/N, trying to get some attention.
Jack stared blankly, as per usual. It seemed like he didn't want to talk or that he was just done with the conversation completely.
Y/N let the silence in the air settle before backing towards the exit. It didn't feel very safe being so close to him, but now that she gave him the option to come downstairs freely, it was a bit scary to think of what he could do.
She stood just beyond the doorframe, still eyeing Jack warily.
"Are you coming or not?" Y/N said as she turned around to descend the stairs, Noki following close behind. Y/N got to the bottom of the steps and looked back up.
Jack's head was protruding from the doorway. Somehow, he managed to get to the door without a peep. Y/N was left bewildered by such a thing. How come he was so loud earlier, and now he's lurking around as if he were as light as a feather?
"I have more food; you just have to walk down here." Y/N beckoned, pointing to the floor. "I know you've done it before."
"The lights..." Jack said in a harsh whisper, holding the doorframe with his slender hand.
"What about them?" Y/N tilted her head.
"Turn. Them. Off. " Jack muttered, but it was difficult to hear from so far away. Y/N raised an eyebrow. Perhaps his eyes were photosensitive, or more fitting, his lack of eyes.
Y/ms fingertips grazed the light switch before she flicked the switch. Now only the natural light that peeked through the blinds lit the room.
Jack slowly stepped down the stairs, hunching over like an animal. Y/N put some space between them by walking into the kitchen. Jack stayed at the bottom of the stairs, seeming to be waiting.
"Oh," Y/n said before pulling open the fridge door. She took some left-overs from a few days ago and held them out to Jack.
Of course, he was hungry; just look how skinny he is. Y/N thought. But you can't exactly call him a small guy either; he was about eight feet tall.
Jack's face split once again to reveal his mouth, nearly inhaling the food presented to him. He took the container, shaking it over his mouth. When it was empty, he cleaned the dish with his tongue, leaving a black-saliva residue on it. His mask went seamlessly back together, and he gave the dish back to Y/N.
