this little piece of flash fiction I wrote during my Creative Writing class one day. It is based off of a night I had where I was feeling a little stressed out and the rain helped me find my center. Well, more like the droplets that fell from the lamppost outside of my dorm room window.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my eyes focus on the sunlight dripping from the lamppost outside my window.
breathe. rain. breathe.
camera, zoom. 3.5x lens. blurry, focus again.
i tell myself to wonder what it feels like. sticky? smooth? does it burn my hand?
i tuck my legs in. knees at my chin. breathe. grab the pen again, click, click.
drops of sunlight. drops of jupiter? train? no, no, just sunlight. no trains. too loud.
i tell myself to wonder what it sounds like. plop? drip? does it slide down windows?
does it really grow magical, golden flowers?
i tell myself to think of the people I love.
he's on the phone with me.
the snaps of his XBOX controller are in beat with the droplets of sunlight. that makes me happy.
the drops themselves? mystery.
they only become sunlight when the sunlight goes away.
i am so tired of leftovers.
breathe. click, snap, plop, drip, rain. breathe again. sunlight, in, out, look again.
maybe i can be okay? maybe i can be okay.
He says, "Are you okay?"
my mouth opens and closes. chest heaves. drops of sunlight, plop. drip. click. snap.
there is a mark on my knees where my chin was. I trace it.
"no"
"That's okay."
it doesnt feel like it. not at all. i have to focus again.
i tell myself to think about what it may taste like. what dose sun taste like? lemon? sugar? fire?
click. click. rain. breathe.
plop, drip, snap. breathe.
maybe i can be okay. i thank the drops of sunlight. they dont acknowledge it.
zoom out. blurry. focus. i close the blinds.
