Projection is a free verse poem I wrote for my Creative Writing class, exploring the connections between acting and social anxiety. I relate to this poem very much, and many have said that this is the best poem they've read from me. I'm pretty proud of it myself.

Spotlights. It's easy
To get lost in them.
Drawing a blank;
It's impossible to be
Off-book when you don't
Even have a script.
Isn't it?
I don't know when
I lost it... maybe it's at
My house. Maybe I
Never got one.
This dress rehearsal
Is not doing much good.
The makeup is too
thick and these clothes
are not mine.
When am I ever
Myself?
I've heard horror
Stories before. Corpses
Lying downstage, some
Thing funny unspoken.
I don't want to be
Dead.
I wish I didn't have
A mouth, I tell my friends.
I wish I wasn't speaking
In soliloquies.
They don't know what
A soliloquy is.
Of course they
do not know.
They aren't actors.
