chapter five .||. dinner
[i bet on loosing dogs]
Theo sat between Mike and Nancy, he was staying at the Wheelers for the night—or multiple. He didn't know yet—since his father called Karen during school, asking if Theo could stay with them for a few nights.
"We should be out there right now. We should be helping look for him." Mike spoke up, Theo couldn't help but agree. He knew Karen was just concerned for her kids safety, but he had a burning urge to run into the woods and scream and cry for Will until his throat went raw and his eyes couldn't cry anymore.
"We've been over this, Mike. The chief says—" Mike cuts his mom off, "I don't care what the chief said!" Karen adorned a stern look on her face, "Micheal!" She scolded, Mike ignored her, like most preteens did. "We have to do something. Will could be in danger!" Mike defended his statement.
"More reason to stay put." Karen said firmly. "I dunno Mrs. Wheeler, Will isn't someone to just disappear. We should help him." Theo spoke up, he really wanted to scream at her for being an insensitive douchebag over a missing twelve year old boy. He wanted to scream and punch and just let go of all of his pent up emotions. Theo wanted to state the obvious. Karen isn't his mom, so why should he listen to her?
Then his logical side kicked in. Karen had been like a mother to him since he was ten. She taught him how to cook, hugged him when he cried. Taught him to respect women. Theo loved his dad, but there were just some things that Benny couldn't provide for him, but Karen did. And she didn't even have to.
"Mom!" Mike exclaimed, obviously not seeing her side of the story. "End of discussion." She spoke, looking between the two boys at the table.
After a moment of silence, Nancy spoke up. "So... me and Barb are gonna study at her house tonight. That's cool, right?" She asked her mom, poking at her food.
"No. Not cool." Karen shook her head, not looking up from her food. "What? Why not?" Nancy asked, irritation slipping into her voice.
"Why do you think? Am I speaking Chinese in this house?" She asked rhetorically, looking around the table. "Until we know Will is okay, no one leave. This includes you, Theo." Karen said, nothing could change her mind.
"This is such bullshit!" Nancy says angrily. "Language." Ted scolds, speaking up for the first time. Theo had to refrain from jumping across the table and beating the sorry man up.
"So we're under house arrest? Just because their friend got lost on the way home from—"
"Wait, this is Will fault?!" Theo spoke up, anger and disgust evident on his face. Since when did Nancy become so... mean?
"Nancy, take that back." Karen demanded, staring dead at her daughter, eyes flickering over Theo and Mike, seeing both of her sons look distraught and outraged.
