chapter eight .||. orange juice
[there's orange juice in the kitchen, bought for the children]
Mike broke the awkward silence beginning to set over the group. "You're in trouble, aren't you?" He asked cautiously, glancing from Sev to El.
When neither of them answered, a very pale and confused Theo spoke up. "What kind of trouble are you in?"
"And who are you in trouble with?" Mike added on, both twelve-year-olds a little more than freaked out.
"Bad." El spoke up, staring at the ground with a distant look. "Care you elaborate?" Theo asked, looking pointedly at Sev.
"Assholes are after us." Sev explained, covering El's ears when he swore.
"So, bad people? Do they wanna hurt you?" Mike asked, looking more at El than at Sev. Theo and Sev shared an amused glance at that fact.
El made a gun with her fingers and pointed it at her head, then Sev's, then Mike's, and finally Theo's.
Theo swallowed nervously, goosebumps erupting on his skin.
"Understand?" El asked, staring at Mike and Theo expectantly. "Definitely." Theo responded in a meek voice, nodding rapidly.
"Micheal! Theodore! Where are you? We're going to be late, let's go!" Karen called from upstairs, breaking the ominous feeling that had settled over the basement.
"Alright. We'll be back. Just stay here, okay? Stay here." Mike quickly said to the wonder siblings, pulling down the blanket over the fort and standing up. The pre-teen was obviously freaking out.
"Dude, relax." Theo said, shaking his head and walking up the stairs behind Mike, who was bounding up the wood loudly.
They said bye to Mike's parents and Holly before hopping on their bikes and riding away.
"Dude! We can't skip school!" Theo shouted when Mike went up a hill and behind the trees to hide. Theo begrudgingly following his lead.
"It's only for today, just until we figure out what to do with them." Mike said quietly, stalking his house and waiting for his parents to leave.
"If my dad finds out, I'm screwed." Theo warned, shaking his head at Mike. "I think you just wanna spend more time with El."
"Wha—I do not!" Mike shouted in defense, nearly toppling over his bike in shock. "Sure, buddy. Sure." Theo laughed, patting his shoulder.
"Hey, they're leaving!" Mike pointed out, watching the Wheeler car pull out of the driveway and down the road. "C'mon!" Mike said, making sure his parents couldn't see him and rolling down the hill.
"Idiot." Theo sighed, following Mike's lead and rolling down the stairs. They got back into the house with Mike's keys and (against Theo's warnings) brought both number kids in the basement upstairs.
"You two want anything to drink? We have OJ, skim milk.." Mike trailed off, muttering a "what else?" under his breath.
"I, for one, would love some OJ." Theo said, raising his arm. Mike pulled his classic bitch face at him, "I wasn't talking to you. Get it yourself."
"Is this how you treat guests, Micheal?" Theo asked, making his way to the kitchen and grabbing four cups for all of them.
"You practically live here." Mike pointed out, watching Theo in disinterest as he poured Orange Juice into four cups.
Theo handed a glass to each of the wonder kids, "Trust me, it's good." He smiled, picking up a glass and offering it to Mike. "I'm good, thanks." Mike declined, shaking his head.
"More for me." Theo shrugged, putting the Orange Juice back in the fridge and grabbing both glasses happily.
El wandered into the living room and Mike followed, Theo hung back in the kitchen with Sev.
"So, does your brother like my sister?" Sev asked, trying to start conversation while sipping his juice.
"First of all, he is not my brother. I'd kill myself if I was related to that incel. Second of all, definitely." Theo nodded, drinking one of his glasses.
"Oh. So you don't live here?" Sev questioned in confusion, scrunching his face up.
"Nope. I live with my dad. Benny. Reminds me, you two were wearing one of his restaurants shirts when we found you, you know my dad?" Theo brought up in curiosity, watching as Sev's face paled.
"He had a kid?" Sev blurted, staring at the table and looking conflicted. "You mean has? Yeah. I'm his kid." Theo corrected, wondering why Sev looked like that. And why he referred to Theo's dad in past tense. Benny wasn't dead.
"Theo... he, uhm.. he got shot. By the bad men." Sev said quietly, trying to be as gentle as possible.
Theo felt his heart stop. "What?" He asked with a confused smile. "I talked to him the other day." He shook his head. His dad wasn't dead. His dad couldn't be dead... right?
The orange juice didn't taste very good anymore.
