[tell them i'm insane]

Theo woke up earlier than Mike and begrudgingly got out of bed at around 5:30 in the morning, at least an hour earlier than he normally would.

Forty minutes later, everyone in the family was sitting at the table, dressed and ready for the day. Theo was wearing some of Mike's clothes—a blue and gray striped shirt, a dark brown jacket, and blue jeans.

Theo was finishing his eggs and toast when Mike got his two eggos and sat down, absolutely absorbing the food.

Theo could visibly see everyone giving Mike weird looks. "Slow down, Mike. That's disgusting." Nancy said, pulling a face. Theo could definitely agree with that, and kicked Mike under the table. Hard.

"Dick." Mike mouthed to Theo, though it was hard to tell what he was saying with a mouth full of food.

"Do a lot of studying last night?" Mike turned to Nancy, deciding to poke the bear.

Nancy gave her brother a warning look, "Yeah, actually. I did." She tried to deflect it. "What was your test on again? Human anatomy?" Theo snorted into his orange juice, hiding it with a cough behind his hand.

Nancy gave a deadpan look to her brother and kicked him under the table, he kicked back. "And here we go." Theo whispered to Holly, turning to his left to help the toddler wipe the juice mustache she had.

"Hey, what's going on?" Karen asked, stopping the kids arguing instantly. All three kids above 10 turned to their mom, "Nothing." They all replied simultaneously, before going back to their food.

After a hurried breakfast, Mike and Theo rushed down the stairs and to the fort in the basement.

El looked up, fiddling with Mike's supercom. Sev was flipping through an old comic book Archie gifted Mike when they were nine.

"Hey, you found my supercom. And you found my comic book!" Mike said, smiling at the two as he looked at the objects both were holding. "Pretty cool, huh?" He asked, focusing his attention on El. "I talk to my friends with it. Mostly Lucas 'cause he lives so close. Signals pretty weak."

When both kids stared at him blankly, Theo decided to save Mike from his crashing and burning. "We uh, got you breakfast."

Mike pulled an eggo and Theo pulled out a piece of toast. "Sorry it's a bit squishy... it was sitting in my pocket for a hot minute." He smiled apologetically, handing the mushy toast to Sev.

Both kids took the food and began eating, "I'm gonna go call my dad." Theo announced, getting up and walking over to the phone while Mike told the kids their half-assed and obvious 'put-together-in-20-minutes-by-a-couple-of-12-year-olds' plan.

Theo tapped his fingers against the phone, gnawing on his lip. The uneasy feeling that something was wrong only intensifying ten-fold when the line stopped ringing. No one picked up.

He sighed, deciding to stop by Benny's Burgers after school. "You can't tell her about last night. Or that you know us." Theo tuned back into their conversation, sitting down by Mike again.

"Understand?" Mike asked with a smile, Sev raised his hand. "Why are we doing this again?" Theo sat back, eyebrows raised. "You can talk? Like full sentences talk?"

"Why wouldn't I?" Sev tilted his head at both of them. "What? You guys think I'm some mute or something?" Theo could detect the faintest country accent coming from him.

"You from Texas or something?" Theo asked, getting them heavily off topic. "What's a Texas?"

"It's a state."

"Like... angry?"

"Wha— no, that's an emotional state. This is a state-state."

Mike looked over, "That's not a thing."

"Then what would you call it, genius?!"

"A place people live."

"We're getting off topic. Do you understand, El?" Theo shook his head, turning his head to the silent girl.

"Really, it's no big deal.. we'll just pretend to meet each other again." Mike assured, basically staring with heart eyes at El. Theo and Sev shared a look of mutual disgust.

"And my mom, she'll know who to call."

"No."

"And she speaks!"

"Shut up, Theo." Mike turned to the boy, elbowing him in the side. He turned back to El, "No?" He repeated in confusion.

"No." She stated firmly again. "Yeah, I agree with Ellie. No way." Sev shook his head, scooting closer to El.

"You don't want my mom to get help?" The wonder siblings shared a look, silently discussing something.

They looked back at Mike and Theo and shook their heads silently, both seemed timid, scared even.

And then Theo recognized the kids from his dream. He found it harder to breathe.
