When Boston got home, he paced back and forth with his hands behind his back, allowing his form to get free of that human disguise. His skin turned light green and gained bumpy scales. His tail dropped down with a small thump. His horns shot through his pine-green hair. His human nose shrank into a cat's nose. The soft thuds of his human feet turned into clacks of his hooves on the hardwood floor. He muttered to himself.
"What the fuck was I thinking.." Boston seldom cussed. He hated it, and thought it made one immature and rather unintelligent. But here, he was angry at himself. How could he just accept a relationship like that when Amber didn't even know who he was? She didn't know anything about Boston! All she knew was that he was "human". And that thing she knew was a lie.
Cookie couldn't help but notice Boston's pacing as he was passing by."Everything okay, Boston?" Cookie asked, cocking his head. Boston's attention snapped to Cookie.
"Uh.. not really!" He replied with a very fake "slap happy" smile. "I just got myself a girlfriend!"
"Oh that's awesome!" Cookie's stud tail wagged a little as he dropped what he was doing and went over to Boston to take Boston's backpack off of him.
"No, it's not awesome.." He gave the bag to Cookie. "I don't think you realize, that girl does not know I'm a lacey." He stopped pacing and ran a hand through his hair, his pointed ears lowering. Cookie took a second to process that. Before his ears lowered as well.
"That.. is... not good." He solemnly said. Boston nodded with a fearful look on his face. "Why did you accept that?"
"I- Look I genuinely love that girl but I wasn't thinking about the lacey stuff and like.." Boston stopped, there were too many thoughts coursing through his head. He took a deep breath. "Maybe. I can just pull it off smoothly."
"And lie to her?! How long do you plan to play the human disguise game?"
"As long as I need to.." He said, heaving a sigh. "I guess the cost of being up here is having to pretend to be something I'm not." There was a moment of silence from both, thinking about the sad but true cost of Boston's adventure on the human realm."Dad," Boston started, looking back up, or down at him. Since Boston was a lot taller than Cookie. "Is there any way for me to become permanently human?" Cookie froze for a moment, the question catching him off guard.
"Boston, you wouldn't want that." He quickly replied, looking extremely concerned at Boston's request.
"Why not? I mean it would fix all of my problems." Boston looked down at his green hands and frowned. He hated being a lacey! He was supposed to be confident in himself, but he wasn't. All the confidence he seemed to have was faked. He had a horrible habit of pretending to be happy. He wasn't, but he had the logic of just "fake it until you make it". That certainly wasn't very healthy.
"No, it wouldn't. You'll regret it." Cookie grew an unhappy look. "I think your species is unique, and something to be proud of!" As Boston's adoptive father, of course he would view his son as perfect and beautiful. That's how parents were.
"No, it's not." Boston replied sternly and harshly. "It's.. shameful. I mean- I'm just.. I'm useless. We were made with a purpose, and that was to serve-"
"Enough, your purpose is more than just.. That." Cookie interrupted him. He hated when Boston thought he was just good for slavery. Cookie knew everything, because Boston told him everything. Cookie was the only one who knew how much Boston truly doubted himself.
"It is! I was bred just to do that and I can't anymore. Yes I hated it but- that's the only extent of my existence and now I'm in love with one of them, damn it!" Boston exclaimed, starting to get frustrated. Tears began to form in his eyes. "I'm not even supposed to be Boston. You know who I am?! I'm 3-27! But I'm such a fucking coward to the extent where I CAN'T ACCEPT MY IDENTITY!"The room was dead silent. Half because of the shock that Cookie had of Boston's emotions, but also the shock of Boston cussing so heavily. Boston's breath was heavy, as he was staring down at his father who looked hurt that Boston would even say such a thing about himself. Boston wiped the tears from his eyes.
"I- I'm sorry.." He quickly said, before running off to his room and shutting the door behind, almost in a slamming way. He didn't mean it, but the wave of emotions he felt- it was just so intense. He grabbed his songbook and his pencil and began to write frivolously. Back and forth, back and forth, went his pencil. When Boston was upset, he got his emotions out through song. Usually that did the trick.
