They were working in the studio most of the day. It was so much fun, they felt so professional, when they were just jamming, just with headsets and fancy equipment. In one day they'd cranked out their entire tracklist for their first album. Almost all of their songs they'd written before, but for their first day in the studio they were trying some new stuff, exploring the new equipment, learning to work with everything and to make the record people happy.
They worked out their new piece, Mr. Brownstone, written off of their love of drugs and alcohol, especially with their new funds. The song was fucking kickass, man. And Axl surprised Slash for a second when he insisted on showing the guys the song they wrote while they were away, fortunately, he figured out the key pretty quickly and he was pretty good at improvising. Though it was kind've a dick move of him to just volunteer Slash to improvise a whole song he'd never worked with before. But at least Slash thought that meant Axl had faith in his skills. It was really different, it was calm and acoustic, and Axl sang low and softly, whistling and slowly dancing as he sang.
God, he was amazing.
Slash was trying to keep working off it with him, but he was so distracting, just the way his body naturally moved with the music, Slash wasn't even sure if the guy knew he was doing it. But Slash's eyes were just drawn to him, he had to keep refocusing them back on the strings.
Fortunately, the other guys seemed to pick it up pretty quickly too, Izzy added a little harmony as Slash worked with the licks, Duff picked up an acoustic too and worked out some rhythm with them, and it just got deeper and deeper and more incredible. It was gentle, and easy, but so intricate and beautiful, it was just, perfect. It was their first real soft, ballad song, it wasn't like heartbreakingly deep, but it wasn't hard or gritty like the rest of the stuff they were working on, it was just perfect.
Slash got so lost in it he didn't even notice Izzy and Duff beginning to harmonize with Axl, and he never even thought about the lyrics. He knew he was singing about patience or something, but it wasn't till Axl caught his eye with a side-grin and he realized: Holy shit its about me! I mean, about us anyway, 'cause those are the literal words I said to him in Indiana, aww!!
Slash tried not to laugh as he continued to play, Axl must've noticed his reaction and he grinned more, still slowly dancing, an ever so slight tint of red on his face. Slash shook his head to himself with a smile, oh my lord my boyfriend is such a hopeless romantic and he doesn't even know it. Pfft, writing songs about me... What a dork.... Its not like I do that.... That would be absurd.
He's such a romantic though holy fuck. And I'm, totally not... It's not like I want to have sex with him on a bed with rose petals or I'm picking out songs to slow dance to or already know what I want our childrens' names to be...........
Slash was never one to understand lyrics, he usually left that stuff completely up to Axl or Izzy or whoever wanted to do it, it just wasn't his thing. He was a little clueless to it most of the time, but every so often he'd listen to one of their songs and realize more meaning or things in the lyrics he hadn't noticed before. He was just kinda oblivious to that, he knew the guys sometimes discussed that kinda stuff, like if Izzy had a song idea that he drew from inspirations of something or other they might talk about using that in the lyrics, but Slash most of the time tuned those conversations out.
The only time he ever noticed it was when Axl wrote a song about Michelle, and he only noticed it because the song's name was literally My Michelle. He never really considered the idea of Axl writing any song about him until one night they were kissing and fooling around and Axl grinned, playing with his hair and asked him, "Y'know what Anything Goes is about?"
And Slash went so fucking red when he realized that Axl had written a song about their kinky sex life. Granted, told from Slash's perspective so its not like it gave away any particular clues it was about him, but still.
