Carolina weaved herself a raft out of the tall grass surrounding her. Once she was done, she used it to row herself to the island made up of rocks and cave systems. Surprisingly, no sharks attacked her on her journey, and she could only think that it was due to gamemaker intervention.

Maybe they were curious to see what her plan was.

Or, maybe the Capitol was tired of shark attacks for the day.

She limped to the largest cave that faced the cornucopia. The second Carolina entered, she dumped everything from her bag on the ground and grabbed all the rope and fishing lines she had collected throughout the games.

She thought about what her father had taught her. All of those days on the dock, tying and untying knots over and over again. She spent the next hour making snare traps.

When she was done, Carolina climbed up the side of the cave and anchored the wire traps along the cave's edge. The traps made up of fishing lines were put closest to the cave's entrance since they were nearly invisible. She tied the traps made from thick ropes at the center of the cave so they would be easily seen and provide her victims a false sense of security.

Carolina stopped when it became dark outside. She left the cave at the sound of the Horn of Plenty and watched the sky. Only two pictures were shown that night.

Marsh's was displayed first. His photo was the first one she had seen where the tribute was smiling. He looked so calm. When the picture changed from Marsh's to the girl from District 12, she wiped her tears away and walked back into the cave.

The next day, Carolina set the last of her traps. She finished early that morning and camped out towards the back of the cave behind a pile of rocks.

Around midday, a cannon sounded, followed closely by a horrified shriek. Carolina froze, looking to the entrance of the cave. She walked slowly to the cave's entrance and peeked her head out.

Two islands over, Sicily was stabbing at Persey's already limp body with her sword.

Carolina could barely recognize the girl. Her face was painted red with blood, her long dark hair was now cut into an uneven bob, and her clothes were ripped at odd angles. Sicily looked to the water, and Carolina followed her gaze.

The District 11 girl was swimming away from the scene. The girl was between the island and the cornucopia when Sicily started running after her. Sicily was still at the shore when the District 11 girl froze in the water and started looking beneath her. She started screaming and kicking, but it was no use. The girl was pulled under the water by a shark.

Another cannon boomed.

Sicily started cackling and pointing at where the water was tinged red. Before Sicily turned and saw her, Carolina ducked back into the cave.

"5 left," Carolina whispered to herself before walking back to her hiding spot.

That night, she woke up suddenly to Claudius Templesmith's voice.

"Ladies and gentlemen, congratulations on making it to the final five. Each of you desperately needs something. At dawn, we will supply those things at the cornucopia. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor."

Carolina knew exactly what would be waiting for her in the cornucopia.

Healing ointment.

Her gash from the shark was too deep to heal with only the small amount of medicine she had applied, and the burn salve did little to help. Marsh's shirt was beginning to fall apart. She cut away the final piece of Marsh's memory, replacing it with what was left of her shirt.
