Finnick felt thousands of eyes burning into the side of his face the moment he stepped onto the stage in front of the Justice Building. It was disturbing how everyone in the crowd looked at him. Some gazed with an ounce of curiosity, while others looked at him with pity or envy or a mix of both. He could somehow even feel the eyes of the people in the Capitol, viewing him through the twenty cameras facing him and the rest of the District 4 victors.
Part of him even wondered if they were already gossiping about his appearance since he hadn't shown his face since his Victory Tour.
It took everything in him not to turn around and sprint off of the stage. The only thing keeping him from doing so was the look of disappointment that his mother would send him if he did. Especially since she had already spent an hour that morning banging on his bedroom door and eventually talking his father into screwing the door off its hinges to get him there in the first place.
Finnick sat down beside Mags, who placed her hand on his knee to calm him down. He hadn't even realized he was bouncing his leg uncontrollably until she stopped him.
"Thanks," Finnick muttered, his eyes still focused on the crowd of children in front of him.
"The first reaping after your games is always the hardest," Mags said. When Finnick didn't say anything, the older woman sighed, "It's nice to see you again, Finnick."
Finnick just nodded and waited until the Capitol video on the history of the games was done airing.
When Lotus Lockflake's heels clicked onto the stage, Finnick didn't know if he was grateful or terrified. She was smiling brightly, as usual, and looked almost excited to see who her newest tributes would be.
"Welcome, welcome, welcome to the 66th annual Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favor," the escort chirped in a sing-songy voice. "As always, ladies first."
Finnick tried to keep his chin up during the entire reaping, both to feign confidence and to keep himself from making eye contact with anyone he may know. It worked as Lotus announced the female tribute, a 15-year-old girl who was in tears by the time she got onto the stage, but the moment the escort said the male tribute's name, his entire facade fell apart.
"The male tribute for District 4 is Beck Meadows."
An ear-piercing screech cried out from the crowd the moment his name left Lotus's mouth. Finnick's eyes snapped in the direction of it, and he wasn't surprised one bit when he saw that it had come from Pearl. Carolina already had her arms wrapped around the girl, comforting her friend tightly as her best friend wept. Finnick watched Carolina from afar, taking her in for the first time in months, but he couldn't let his gaze linger long.
