Qibli's POV

"Qibli! Wake up or you'll be late for school!" Thorn yelled from downstairs.

Qibli groaned and realized the sleepover was yesterday. He got out of bed, brushed his teeth, and threw on a black shirt and jeans.

As he walked downstairs, Sunny was squealing.

"Finally! The school has a Winter Formal!" Sunny waved a paper in front of Qibli's face.

"What happened to Winter?" Qibli asked, fully alert.

"Not your friend. It's a dance! Like a ball, basically. And they're letting freshmen go this year too!" Sunny explained, "Who will you take?"

Winter.

No, are you serious? He'd never agree.

"I dunno," Qibli said, pouring milk into his bowl of Cheerios.

"Well, it's in another week so you better find someone," Sunny winked.

"Enough with the formal, Sunny. Qibli, the bus will be here in another minute, so hurry up," Thorn waved her hand, holding a spoon.

"Alright," Qibli put his bowl in the sink and grabbed his backpack, "See you later, Mom!"

"Bye, honey," Thorn waved, "You better get going too, Sunny."

Qibli got on the bus and sat in his usual spot with Winter.

"Hey! How's Ice Boy doing?" Qibli smiled.

"Leave me alone, Sandsnorter" Winter frowned.

"Did you hear about the Winter Formal? I bet they named it after you because you're so cool," Qibli winked.

"I said leave me alone," Winter said, a bit louder. Winter looked out the window.

"Oh, umm... ok, then," Qibli looked away.

What's with him today?

Later that day, in math

Qibli and his friends were in their study group doing a basic factoring worksheet before starting a new unit for review. Turtle was absent that day though, he got a fever.

Solve for x. --> x² + 11x = -30

"Why does math existtt??" Kinkajou whined.

"Kinkajou, you just have to factor! It's so easy!" Moon pointed.

"But stillll," Kinkajou layed her head on her desk, "Let's do something else. Winter, you've been awfully quiet! What's up?"

"Nothing you need to know about," Winter said.

"Oooooh, Ice Boy's got a crushh," Kinkajou teased.

"Shut up," Winter glared at her.

"Who are you thinking about?" Kinkajou asked.

"Kinkajou, stop it," Moon looked worried.

"I said nothing you need to know about! Why can't you just do the worksheet and stop being such a pussy!" Winter almost yelled.

The whole study group went silent. Some people looked at Winter like he was crazy, but went back to work.

Kinkajou's lip quivered, she was about to cry.

"Winter, we know you're having a bad day, but that doesn't mean you can treat people like shit!" Qibli frowned.

"I thought you were nicer..." Kinkajou shook her head and walked out of the room.

"Winter..." Moon went after her.

"Wait! I'm sorry, I really am! I didn't me-" Winter tried going after Kinkajou as well, but Qibli grabbed his arm.

"Let go of me," Winter winced in pain.

Why does this part of his arm feel so thick?

"Leave her alone for some time, then go apologize. If you have anything to talk about, I-" Qibli said.

Winter's eyes started to tear up.

"Let go of me!" Winter pulled his hand out of Qibli's grasp and dashed out of the classroom.

"Wait!" Qibli went after Winter, but lost him after a few turns.

I should've payed more attention to the school map they gave me.

Qibli put his hand through his messy hair and headed back to class.

Winter's POV

Winter ran into the boys bathroom and locked the door.

He sat down and cried so much, he felt like he had no tears left.

"Why are you always so careless and stupid? Can't you be more like your siblings?" His dad yelled that morning. He threw a vase at Winter, scratching his arms with broken glass.

Winter stood up and walked over to the bathroom mirror. He looked at himself. His messy hair and tear-stained face. He pulled up his sleeves and unwrapped the bandages on his arms from the cuts. They were starting to bleed again.

It took Winter a while until he pulled himself together and managed to walk out of the bathroom without breaking down again. He walked into the classroom and saw Qibli sitting alone, looking worried. Moon was next to Kinkajou, who looked normal now, but avoided looking at Winter. Qibli and Moon looked at Winter. Moon gestured to Kinkajou and mouthed "apologize."

Winter avoided looking at Qibli and walked over to Kinkajou, "Kinkajou, I apologize for all of my inappropriate behavior that time. Please forgive me."

Kinkajou looked away.

"Please?"

"Okay," Kinkajou looked up and smiled at at Winter.

Winter walked back to his seat and finished the worksheet. Qibli walked over to him and asked him for help.

"Sooo... how does 14 work?" Qibli pointed.

"You can figure it out, just factor," Winter didn't look up.

"You good?" Qibli asked.

Winter stopped writing and looked up, "What makes you think I'm not okay?"

"I dunno... pretty much everything?" Qibli shrugged.

"Well... I'm doing just fine so go and do the worksheet without bothering me, Sandsnorter," Winter continued working.

"Okay..." Qibli stood there for a few seconds staring at Winter, but then walked back to his desk.
