Jaypaw groaned inwardly as his his nose sniffed the fresh morning air. He wasn't in the mood to be awake, and wanted to go right back to sleep, but knew he had cats to attend to. With a grumble, he hoisted himself up and padded towards the medicine cat supplies, then frowned.
"Leafpool!" He called out to his mentor. He could hear the thumping of her paws as she came up to him, and he could feel a prick of irritation from her.
"Jaypaw, I'm a bit busy right now. I think Longtail and Mousefur have whitecough," She growled, sheathing and unsheathing her claws. Jaypaw rolled his blind eyes and muttered something sarcastic.
"That's why I called you. We're short on catmint. Do you want me to go fetch some?" He could use the time outside of camp. Things felt more suffocating than usual. Ever since Hollypaw, his sister, had became a warrior apprentice and Jaypaw became a medicine cat apprentice, his life seemed to become more duller and duller every day. He could feel Leafpool's anxiety rise.
"Are you sure you know the way?" She asked, making him scowl. "Yes I'm sure, just because I'm blind doesn't mean I don't know my lefts and rights," He growled. Leafpool stood silent for a moment before flicking her tail.
"Okay, but please do come in one peace. Don't cross over clan territory. ShadowClan is already sour, since the days are getting colder," She instructed him. He rolled his blind eyes.
"But for now, go grab something to eat, then go fetch the herbs," She said, nudging him out of the medicine cat den. He grumbled something, then headed towards the fresh kill pile. He picked up a mouse and placed it on the ground, crouching to take a bit out of it when he heard someone call his name
"Jaypaw!" Hollypaw called out, making me sigh. "Did you see the wren Poppypaw caught? It was huge!!" She said, awe in her voice. He couldn't help but feel bitter.
"No, actually, I didn't see it with my me two blind eyes," He growled at her, making her flinch.
"Okay, okay, no need to be grumpy. Me and Lionpaw are going to watch some of the warriors train. Do you wanna join us?" She said, excitement in her mew. Jaypaw was about to tell her that he literally couldn't watch, but Leafpool called out his name.
"Hurry up Jaypaw!" She reminded him, and he scarfed down the remains of his mouse and said goodbye to Hollypaw.
Jaypaw's mind was filled with quiet thoughts as he picked his way through the bramble. It had been a while since he had been alone with himself, and he enjoyed the moment while it lasted. He jumped over a tree root, his thoughts straying towards the prophecy that he and his littermates had found out about.
There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws, and a fourth ally who will help them with their cause. They already knew who the three were- Him, Lionpaw, and Hollypaw. But what about the other ally? They hadn't even talked about who it could be.
It is someone in ThunderClan, right? Because it'll take moons if they're in a different clan, His mind thought exhaustedly. He came along side the river, the sound of the water softly roaring as foam sputtered left and right. Then his ears pricked. He could hear something splashing in the river. Something alive. The noise of something, possibly a head, splashed and he could hear a cat gasping for air. Without thinking, he dived into the river, not knowing how to swim.
The water was cold as it rushed, pushing his body forward and backward. He flailed, trying to find the other cat, and felt their body against his, nearly unconscious. He sunk his teeth into her chest fur, trying to drag her out. Even thought she was the same size as him, he struggled, feeling both of them slowly sink. Mouse dung, Jaypaw. Now I'm going to die quietly because of some random cat I've never met. Suddenly, her eyes opened, revealing their deep emerald hue. Wait a minute, He thought confused. How can I see what her eyes look like? I can only do that in dreams. He then felt her start panicking, her arms waving around frantically. Jaypaw felt himself sinking.
We're both going to die! His mind wailed silently. Suddenly, teeth clenched onto his scruff, and he could feel himself being lifted up. He didn't complain as a familiar cat lifted him out of the water and onto land. He coughed up some water, and turned around to see a very angry Leafpool glaring back at him.
"I told you to be safe! Did you not listen to a word I said?" She yelled at him. He flattened his ears at her. He didn't try to drown! He was trying to help the other cat. Remembering the other she-cat, he pawed the ground, trying to feel her on the earth. He looked at Leafpool, the pointed at the mysterious she-cat.
"I was trying to save her," He argued, earning a scoff from Leafpool. Before she could reply, though, a fuzzy 'where am I' came from the she-cat. Leafpool rushed towards her, trying to see if there were any serious injuries.
"Jaypaw, hold her legs, and I'll hold her upper body. We're bringing her back to camp. And we are not out of this conversation," She warned, and he held his tongue so a sharp reply wouldn't come out. He begrudgingly agreed, hosting her legs up, as he and Leafpool made their way towards ThunderClan camp.
