Come on," Harriet said to me as we stepped out of the car. Walking beside her, I couldn't help but feel a rush of nostalgia. I missed her so much. Back in Galway (yeah, the Glade again, don't ask why I chose that once more), we always had a blast together. She was the only one who truly understood me, and she was also incredibly powerful.I really missed those days. Nothing beat sitting around the fire, chatting, and dancing through the nights together.
When I was at my lowest, she was always there for me. During my darkest moments, she never judged me; she just stayed by my side.
She understood me like no one else did, and she even helped me eat when I couldn't bring myself to do it alone.
During a dark period, I fell into a deep hole, and I couldn't find my way back. No one seemed to notice, or maybe they just didn't want to see it. But somehow, she knew.
I don't know how, but she did. Even when I got stung and all my memories flooded back, plunging me into the reality of the hell we were in, she didn't push me away. She stayed by my side, offering silent support when I needed it the most.As we walked down the dusty road, lost in our thoughts, Harriet nudged my shoulder, pulling me out of my reverie. "Hey," she said, flashing me a smile, "I gotta show you something after you meet Vince."
Before she could finish, a man with a goatee stepped in, his voice cutting through the air. "Who are they?" he demanded, eyeing us suspiciously. Harriet explained that we were immune and found in the mountains.
"Did you check them?" he pressed, his tone skeptical. Harriet nodded confidently, stating her trust in us, but he remained unconvinced. Suddenly, Brenda collapsed, face-first, sending shockwaves through the group.
In the chaos that ensued, I found myself taking a step back, overwhelmed by the unfolding events.
As chaos unfolded and Vince accused Brenda of being a crank, my mind raced with questions. When had she turned? The tension in the air was palpable as a familiar face intervened, urging Vince to lower his weapon.
I recognized her instantly, but her presence only added to my confusion. "I've seen her before," I murmured to myself, furrowing my brow as our eyes met. She seemed equally surprised to see me, her expression mirroring my own bewilderment. "Hope? You're alive?" she exclaimed, disbelief evident in her voice.
Her words only deepened my confusion. "What...?" I trailed off, unable to comprehend what was happening. She insisted on speaking with Thomas, and as they walked away, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease settling over me.
In the privacy of her makeshift lab, she began extracting blood from Thomas's hand to create a serum for Brenda. As I watched the scene unfold, memories of my past began to resurface, prompted by Mary's probing questions.
I hesitated at first, As I recounted my memories of my parents to Mary, she listened intently, nodding along as I spoke. When she asked about my parents, I hesitated, nervously fidgeting with my fingers. Eventually, I described my mother's hospital bed, the bruises on her hands, and her nonsensical ramblings of random numbers. I vividly remembered her repeating the phrase "open the door" over and over. Mary's expression darkened as she absorbed my words, and when I mentioned my father's tendency to blame my mother's behavior on me, she sighed sympathetically.
"It's okay, Hope. I understand," Mary said gently, reaching out to hold my hand. She suggested that I rest, but I couldn't shake the feeling of unease. When I pressed her for an explanation, Mary hesitated, admitting that she didn't know how to approach the topic with me. I nodded in understanding as she left the room, leaving me to ponder the mysteries of my past.
