Benny's POV
A week after New York, we were back inside Studio One at EastWest.
No parties. No press.
Just the five of us working on the new album.
The studio had high ceilings, dark wood walls, and hardwood floors worn smooth from years of sessions. Guitars and old amps lined one side of the room, with keyboards stacked near the control-room glass.
Damon's kit sat behind tall black baffles. Overhead mics hung above the cymbals, and cables ran between our gear and the recording equipment.
Columbia kept calling it our comeback album. They wanted older songs reworked without losing what made them ours, along with new material that showed where we were now.
We started with Lost Cause.
Damon found the beat while we were still dropping our bags by the wall, tapping his sticks against the edge of a table.
I turned toward him. "Don't lose that."
"Wasn't gonna."
By the time he moved behind the kit, the beat was locked in. Tight without sounding too clean, with enough restraint to keep the tension underneath it.
Amelia stood across from him, barefoot with her bass hanging low. Her eyes stayed closed as she worked through the bridge she'd written before the song had lyrics.
"Let that last note hang a little longer," she told Damon.
He adjusted on the next pass without breaking tempo.
Fallon sat against the wall with a notebook open across her lap. Torn pages surrounded her, and the Sharpie in her hand had stained her fingers black.
Bowie worked near the keyboards, pulling old voice memos into the session. Unfinished guitar parts from 2017. Half-written melodies I'd recorded in hotel rooms and backstage bathrooms.
He cut what didn't work and layered the rest beneath Damon's beat.
I stood in the booth with the mic live, waiting for the verse in my head to fit what they were building.
Lost Cause wasn't made for easy radio play. It carried everything we never said when the band fell apart.
