Chapter 20

Autumn

Looking down at the sandy shores, I smell the fresh sea breeze. The cool wind whispers past my ears... sending shivers up my spine. My feet now feel out of my control as they pull me toward the crashing waves like a magnet. I look back to see him watching me, but I take every minute to soak in the magic of the ocean. The pure blue sky and endless clear sea... my breath seems lost in the moment. The deep shades of pink and yellow hibiscus flowers create a soft blanket over the salty waters. Closing my eyes... I hear the seagulls break the peaceful silence. His tall shadow appears next to me. "It really is breathtaking," I hear him say. "Yeah, it really is..." I whisper softly. My breath shudders at his touch. I look down and see his hand pulling mine toward the silk-like sand. I sit down next to his tall body and close my eyes. I feel a single tear roll down my sun-kissed skin and open my eyes. "Hey... you ok?" I hear him ask. "Y... yeah, I'm ok." I slowly get up and wince at the pain it causes. I look down to see him staring back at me... worry covering his freckled face. "Do you mind if I take a walk quick?" I ask while looking towards the sky. "Yeah of course." He whispers back, and I walk towards the cold shores. The soft, white sand hides my feet under the cold waters. Looking out on the long horizon, the high sky slowly dims to a burst of soft pastel-like colours... and soon night falls. The night sky is how I wish to fly. It is the most beautiful art, alive with raw energy, a song for my eyes only...

Watching the moon's reflection on the soft waves, the wind swirls my long brown strands into my face and my navy blue jumper around my dark silhouette. I look over my shoulder and see his eyes closed... his body swaying with the wind. I walk back up to him and sit on the now-shadowed sand. "Cruz..." I suddenly hear myself whisper into the cold wind. "Yeah?"

"Have you ever wondered where we go when our time comes to an end?" I ask while I feel tears slowly forming. His soft voice breaks the silence. "Yeah, I have... and I have an answer for you. I believe that when you are born your life becomes a story. Every day is like a new chapter for you to write. Your book is completely unique to mine but at the end of our final chapter, we all become stories... filled with memories from the past... waiting to be opened once more. Our stories don't ever end... they are like a song... the melody lives in our souls forever, Autumn." I take a moment to think about this. It confuses me but it doesn't stop the sharp pain climbing up inside of me. So mine is coming to an end but not? Is what I want to ask but instead I say, "I believe that your life will only end once your heart is filled, and you know how to be loved and to love." He looks over at me. "Yeah, you're right. But luckily, we aren't going anywhere anytime soon." Tears spike my eyes and I look away. Would he say that differently if he knew the truth?
