Chapter 22

Autumn

"Hi," he says while I open the front door. "Hey?" I say while looking at his messy hair. "Mind if we hang out today?" he whispers. A flutter of butterflies takes flight in my stomach. "Sure. Come in."

We walk up to my room and I sit on the couch. He is wearing a black jumper and black tracks. He sits down next to me. "You passed out last night..." he trails off. "Yeah, mum told me." He lets out a short laugh and I giggle. The sun is beaming straight into my cold room and the wind brings a few strands of hair into my face. He takes his hand and pushes one behind my ear. My face heats up and I look away because I know I'm blushing. "So you like to paint?" he asks me while looking at my paintings all over my walls. "Yeah... I do."

"That's cool." I feel his eyes on me and I can't help but smile.

We spend the rest of the day talking and eating stale chips. I end up putting on a movie and he stays late. Halfway through the movie, he falls asleep and I stare at his soft face. His long eyelashes cover his tiny freckles just under his eyes.

I look at my bright phone screen that shines in the dark and realize it's 23:56. It's late. I pull the fluffy grey blanket my mum had made me when I was little over my neck. I look at Cruz, who is completely in dreamland and soon doze off too.
