Chapter 23

Autumn

I wake up with my head pounding. A headache. Great. I look out of my window and see the rain pouring down around my house. Cruz must have left because his blanket is folded and he's not here. I get up and see a box lying on my desk. That wasn't here yesterday...

I walk to my desk and see a note addressed to me. I pick it up and read the familiar handwriting.

Autumn

Was looking through old boxes up in the attic and found this. Thought you might want to keep it. Even though it s hard now, the spotlight will always be yours.

Love Pops

My eyes spark with tears as I unfold the box flaps. Inside I see the one thing that cuts me like a knife. My red point ballet shoes. I pick them up and hold them to my chest. All the memories come back like a knife into my back. I close my eyes and try to push the memory away.

An applause bursts from the crowd as I walk into the spotlight of the big stage. I get into position and the music starts. Luminary by Joel Sunny fills the wide room as my feet dance along the wooden floors. Cheers fill my ears as I land from a grand jeté. My heart sings with joy as I feel a huge smile spread along my face. I jump once more and hear a loud thump hit the floor. All I can see is black and I hear someone scream my name from the crowd. Everything goes into silence and I only remember waking up in a hospital bed with my mum by my side a few days later.
