Chapter 24

Cruz

I don't even know how I got here. All I know is I'm falling in love. Her soft smile and pure heart struck me from day one.

It's been two days since I last spoke to her and I need to be honest with myself, I miss her. My family has given me space for long now and since that night... I haven't spoken to my dad properly. Between the odd 'hi' or 'bye' there's nothing else. Wilbur went off to camp on Friday and will be gone for the next two weeks.

At the moment I'm on my way to Autumn's house. We had called last night and decided to go to a special place for the day. I had told her it was a surprise. There's a fresh breeze in the air but nothing I can't handle. I arrive in front of her small house and watch her face lighten up as she gets up from the porch. She walks over to me with wide black rings around her dark blue eyes. I hop out of the car and practically run towards her. She throws her body weight on top of me and wraps her cold arms across my back. Her sweet scent takes hold of my nose and my body relaxes. She sniffles into my jean jacket and pulls her face back to my eyes. I sense something different from the last time we were together. She walks over to her side and climbs in slowly. Not saying a word I get in too and grab the blanket I put in the backseat earlier for her. I hold it out for her to take and she smiles briefly before taking it from my hands. The violet that always surrounds her has now dimmed to a watered-down blue, barely noticeable to the naked eye. I turn on the ignition and slowly back out of the driveway. Her head lies on my shoulder and I grin ever so slightly. I turn on the radio and Last Dance by Montell Fish plays softly in the background. We stop at an intersection and I close my eyes... filling them with the baby blue that the music causes. Something touches my hand and I snap out of my thoughts. I look down at the seat where my hand rests, now with Autumn's hand resting above it. I look at her pale face and realize she is sleeping again. My heart warms at her touch but deep down I know there's something she isn't telling me. I look at her face once more... I notice her lips that have slowly lost their colour and her soft freckles that brush her face slowly fade into her pale skin. Confusion takes hold of me but I push it down and drive to where I need to be.

We arrive and she slowly wakes up from slumber. Her hand never leaving mine the whole way here moves to push through her fuzzy hair. She opens her eyes and looks at me. "I'm sorry. I've just been tired lately..." she trails off quietly. "It's ok Autumn. We're here though." She looks at me with guilt and quickly moves her face out into the wide field in the background. I turn the car off and get out. Walking to her side I take in the view we have in front of us. I reach her side and open the door. She looks at me with a short smile and holds her hand out for me to grab. I take hold of her hand and wince at how cold it is... I help her out and watch her as she takes in the burst of colour, filling the long lush green grasslands ahead. "My dad used to bring me here when I was little. I always thought it was something that looked like it was out of a fairytale," I say while walking down the hill. She follows behind me and we soon make our way into the middle of billions of daisies. She sits down and looks up into the clear sky. I sit down next to her and she lies down in the tall grass. I look up into the sky and follow the birds flying above us. "It's unreal Cruz..." she whispers. "Yeah it is."

We spend the next two hours talking about home and school. She looks so beautiful as her hair shines in the warm sun.

I look at her and feel myself blush. She's the unreal thing here. She looks at me and I realize I've been staring. I quickly look away and smile to myself. She stands up and so do I. She walks over to me and wraps her arms around me once more. I breathe in her scent and keep her close to me. I suddenly feel her body whimper and she falls to the ground. Fear takes hold of me as I scream her name. She looks up at me, her eyes struggling to focus on me and I hear her soft voice, "Cruz..." she whispers. "Its ok I'm here. Stay strong." I pull her into my arms and sprint to my car. I have no idea what's going on but as soon as I get to my car I grab my phone and dial 911. "Hello. My friend has collapsed. HURRY UP AND GET HERE!" I slam the phone down and look at her face. Her breathing slows and her colours fade to nothing. I hold her closer to me. Please, not her too. I breathe in deep as I see sirens approach us. It's going to be ok. I feel tears fall down my cheeks as they take her from my arms. I run to my car and follow the ambulance all the way to the hospital.
